Geeky Goods Feature: T-shirt Terrorist

If you are down on your luck, wearing the same geeky shirt for the fourth day in a row, then you really need to check out these guys:

They are a local company that started off as a small online shop and have expanded over time to be a full blown South African alternative fashion label. Their range includes all sorts of designs to get your geek juices flowing. They design original concepts taking from pop culture in a comic art style. They are made and printed locally for distribution through their website (that link right up there) and various events around the country, the next being rAge. The ideas stem from Harry Fokker, the owner and operator of T-shirt Terrorist, and are completed by a team of freelance and agency designers, vector illustrators and other artists.

As mentioned they offer comic art tees but to really get that market share they also make rude and offensive shirts. This has had the side effect of riling up various religious and political groups due to the acerbic nature of their satire. Did I mention they have a blog? (http://www.tshirtterrorist.co.za/propaganda) You can get additional snippets of their satire, often in the Onion-style news format and feeding off meme-culture spreading across the internet. Commenting on social, popular and political topics tends to ruffles a few feathers.

To keep up with fashion trends and market needs they are expanding to include graphic design prints, panel comic book art on shirts, urban-styled stencil art ,tattoo art, geometric art, full color illustrations and photographic art. While moving into all these areas they still keep true to their core, the humor approach that we know as the T-shirt Terrorist brand. At rAge they will be showcasing their new comic art tees, moving into many new fandoms. Having mens,woman and kids cuts as well as hoodies available will definitely let them to appeal to as many people as possible (I’m definitely going to need a new hoodie). Just to give you a taste they will have designs based off: Star Wars, Star Trek, Zombies, Lego, Transformers, Breaking Bad, Adventure time and 8-bit gaming!

As mentioned their range is extension and continually expand, close to 100 already completed design and 1000’s of works in progress. They constantly have new designers on board, both local and abroad, who have been attracted to the T-shirt Terrorist brand, it’s ethos, it’s pull-no-punches approach on topical issues and a braod base of developing concepts. This allows designers a ton of freedom to express themselves and their art. (Apparently they pay well too, hint hint)

They have their HQ in Parkhurst which not only stocks their products but other local designers and artists, some well known, others getting their foot in the door. This is fast becoming the destination outlet for pop culture t-shirts in Johannesburg. New developments are on the way for their online platform which should assist in cementing their position as the leading independent online humorous and satirical t-shirt brand in the country.
