TV Series Review: The Flash S02E07 – Gorilla Warfare

When we last caught up with Barry, he was at his lowest point. Zoom not only paralysed The Scarlet Speedster, but humiliated him in front of his entire town. To make matters worse, his dad freshly released from prison, leaves town with no real explanation, more on that later. Let’s dissect what went down on ‘Gorilla Warfare’.

Team Flash are working tirelessly to get Barry back in original form, his accelerated healing causes a miraculously fast recovery and blah, blah, blah… we get it. The villain of the season is bad-ass and can cause Barry great pain. Being aware of Barry’s identity and his (not so secret) S.T.A.R labs headquarters, shows that Zoom is capable of hurting Barry not only physically, but through his loved ones too. There is no suspension of belief here, we all know Barry will recover like he did on the seventh episode of last season ( Power Outage ). Zoom isn’t any more or less of a threat if Barry recovers half an episode later. Point is, throwing off the disability for a second time, is too cliché of a trope for the modern discerning geek (for more on this trope, click here ).

Yet even in such dark times for Central City, you can always count on Cisco Ramone to lighten things up. He couldn’t be any more excited for a date with the beautiful Kendra Saunders, prophesising the date ending in breakfast (bow chika wow wow). Unfortunately for him, his premonitions were wrong. Fortunately for us, his vibe with Kendra offers him a vision (and our first glimpse) at Hawkgirl.

Villian of the week: Gorilla Grodd

The return of Grodd couldn’t have come at a better time. Team Flash knows the power this hyper-intelligent beast possesses, therefore the best time for Barry to recover is soon. Personally, I wasn’t a big fan of the sentient creature on his official debut of “Grodd Lives”. The only enjoyable aspects of that episode was The Flashes supersonic punch and the range of fearful expressions we witnessed from Joe West while kidnapped. This time around, Grodd means business, telepathically kidnapping Caitlyn to assist him in his master plan to create more gorilla’s. Such a plan is terrifying and frankly, genius. Grodd understands the value of strength in numbers, and Caitlyns compassion for him is a point of manipulation. Caitlyn believing that Grodd desires more superhuman Gorilla’s is due to loneliness is a pretty naïve angle from her part but at least her loyalties lie with Team Flash.

Tricking Grodd into believing that Earth-2 Harrison Wells is Eobard Thawne was pretty smart and nerve wracking to watch, although I’m still not convinced he’s a good guy. Wells is clearly looking out for number one and that involves getting his daughter from Zoom. This means that he would do anything to get her back, even if it means throwing a member of Team Flash under the bus.

No amazing fight sequences this week, this was mostly an introspective episode, introducing us to (OMG) Hawkgirl and dealing with Barry overcoming his fear of failure and embracing his hurting hero status.

It’s not easy being a hero. Expectations are higher and so are the stakes. Loved ones are constantly under threat and personal tragedy is often around the corner, not to mention the whole responsibility thing. Despite the lack of fight sequences ‘Gorilla Warfare’ proves that the show doesn’t need that to be entertaining. A good plot, emotional moments and character evolution are the key ingredients to a satisfying episode.

An enjoyable, emotionally charged episode that managed to propel the plot without making it seem rushed. Any episode placed after Gorilla Warfare would struggle to match expectations. Thankfully, an Arrow/Flash crossover is bound to solve unanswered questions and keep the momentum going.
