As with most gaming peripherals these last few years flashy packaging, radical looks and vivid lights have made us dubious about the audio quality of gaming headsets – One can no longer assume great audio fidelity on brand preference or experience alone. Fortunately for us, peripheral manufacturers are now realising how much more important audio quality is to gamers. Now offering more capable gaming drivers and improved software support, all of which are characteristic of the Logitech G933 Artemis Spectrum Headset. A headset I’ve had the pleasure of using for the last few weeks on both my PC and Xbox One console.

What you Get in the Box:

Alongside the Logitech G933 Artemis Spectrum Headset, you will find a 3.5mm analog cable with audio controls and an inline microphone for when you don’t want to use the fixed boom mic. You’ll also find an RCA to 3.5mm conversion cable and a 3.5mm to 2.5mm converter jack. Lastly, you’ll find a 3 meter USB to Micro-USB cable used to charge the G933’s and alternatively supply constant power to the headset bypassing the battery altogether.

Build Quality and Comfort:

Headsets need to feel better than they look, to cater for long hours of use without causing much if any discomfort over time. What makes the G933’s unique here, is how they create a symbiosis of these requirements. Looking simply gorgeous, the G933’s flaunts a great deal of aesthetic appeal and still provides great comfort.

Available in two colours, black and white (referred to as Snow) the most apparent trait of the G933 is how sleek it looks. A modern design with interesting angles and curves alike, it also features two swappable side panels on each ear (3D printer’s dream) both housing either the USB dongle or battery pack. Each edge of the movable parts are seamlessly designed and makes it a beautiful headset to look at. The mic boom is neatly tucked away in the front of the left ear cup and can be extended slightly to better suit your preferred positioning (it is a mission to retract the extended arm though). The mic also features an LED which will indicate when the mic is muted or not.

Being slightly smaller and surprisingly heavier than most headsets, one would question the comfort of the G933’s. I was pleasantly surprised at how snugly they fit. Not vice-gripping my head into submission, they rely on both the headband and ear-cups to carry themselves on your head – Proper adjustment of the expandable headband is key here. Both the cups and headband feature a new breathable sports mesh wrapped around cushiony pillows that are of the “over-the-ear” kind and apply no pressure on the soft tissue of your ears at all. The ear cups are removable allowing you to give them a wash from time to time. I do have one gripe with the appearance, featuring two lighting zones, specifically a light strip on the rear of each ear cup and a Logitech G logo on the side of each as well, you can customise various animations using a range of up to 16.8 Million colours create the look you desire. While this does make it pretty to people around you, it holds little purpose to the user and unnecessarily drains battery life fairly quicker than when not used – decreasing battery life per use down to 8 hours from 12 hours.

Features and Functions:

For a headset as small as the G933, it packs a bunch of functionality most headphones don’t and surprisingly carries the majority of it within the actual set itself. What makes this handy is that it removes the need for a control center or mixer you’d otherwise need to find a space on your desk for. For one, the mic is automatically muted when the boom is returned to its resting position AND there is a mic mute button behind the left ear cup, situated just between the volume control wheel and the programmable G-keys. This gives you options and we like options.

The G-Keys are 3 individual buttons you’re able to bind to media controls or even in-game commands or macros. The latter held no water in my environment as I found the buttons rather out of the way for that purpose, however programming them for media use was phenomenal@ Especially when walking around or relaxing on my loafer listening to music, effortlessly skipping songs and pausing them as needed. It made streaming music wirelessly simple and it’s doable over the 2.4GHz range the G933’s dongle accommodates. Other controls featured on the back of the left ear cup are the aforementioned volume wheel and additionally the power switch for the headset.

One of the most outstanding features of the G933’s, and by far my favourite is the multi-platform compatibility. Capable of working with your PC and PS4 via either the audio Jack or the Dongle, known as the Wireless Mix Adapter, it couldn;t be easier. You can even use the Wireless Mix Adapter to stream audio from your home theater system via the Mix Adapter as well and it doesn’t stop there! I had the G933’s connected to my PC via the dongle and had it connected to my Xbox One via the 3.5mm cable all at once and seamlessly switched between the two platforms without losing a single beat. This is due to the G933’s ability to stream multiple source audio from up to 3 separate devices. I could, for example, have connected another device to the dongle using its own 3.5mm port for yet another audio stream. This is by far the most remarkable and intuitive feature any headset I’ve ever used has displayed and it alone is a perfect reason to grab the G933’s for multi-platform console and PC gamers alike!

Audio and Microphone Quality:

The G933 Artemis Spectrums use Logitech’s Pro-G drivers, one in each ear cup. Made with hybrid mesh materials the Pro-G drivers provide only the best audio quality. Rich, deep bass and crisp, clean highs deliver both music and gaming to you in the immaculate clarity you’d expect from a premium set of headphones. Capable of accurate 7.1 audio immersion, you have the option of using either Dolby or DTS Headphone:X Surround Sound, easily creating clear spatial awareness while not missing a single audio cue. I tested it extensively with Youtube, gaming and my music playlists and was personally put aback at how far Gaming headset audio has come with Logitech. Music is especially difficult to master when emulation of surround effects is part and parcel of your product, the G933’s perfectly differentiate between the streamed media and are very capable of outputting music audio that would leave even the fussiest of audiophiles impressed. This quality carries over perfectly when using with consoles and the 3.5mm jack for stereo input – the sounds were perfect and I especially enjoyed how well it managed to play complex scores like the Halo Wars 2 theme song without missing a beat or tone.

The noise-cancelling microphone ensures that you’re heard with crystal clarity. Tested across Team Speak, Discord and Xbox Live party chat, only words of approval and appreciation of quality were received. Headset microphones have a reputation for lacking quality and with the help of the Logitech Software you can tweak and change your Noise-reduction settings to create a very audibly clear experience for your team mates. However as expected, it’s still no match for a table microphone.

Conclusion:

The Logitech Artemis Spectrum G933’s are by far one of the greatest products ever released by Logitech. Setting a new standard for the collaboration of Quality and Support, it’s going top take a whole lot of innovation to beat. Being without a doubt, the most intuitive headset available for the multi-platform gamer at this time, I can’t suggest it more. For those feeling that the current going price is a bit steep at around R3,500.00 you can grab the wired Logitech G633’s which feature the exact same quality of sound and build losing out of only multi-source audio at about half the cost.

The Logitech G-Series of peripherals brings the quality we have come to expect from Logitech. A little on the expensive side still, the G933's counter with unique features and great software support.
