Star Wars Day - Favourite Star Wars Gaming Moments

On this Hallowed day of May the 4th, we at Geek Node have all been influenced by the movies as most of you have. But besides the impact the movies have had on our lives, some of our fondest memories are from experiencing the digital game world of the Star Wars Universe. Here are some of our absolute favourite memories from the Star Wars games.

“One of my favourite Star Wars games, and perhaps series, to date, is Jedi Knight. The level of details that went into the original game, Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, was simply astonishing. It was also one of the only Star Wars games the utilised live action sequences as Full Motion Videos. There are many moments throughout the game that sticks with me to this day, however, the standout moment in the game for me, though, was the climactic final battle between Kyle Katarn and Jerec, the would be new ruler of the Galactic Empire.

The environment around you powers Jerec, and you need to block his access to the core in order to prevent him from healing. Should he make it to the core, he pulls Kyle in to deal massive damage. The pull will also cause the two statues in the room to move closer together. If after three healing cycles, the statues reach the core, Jerec seals himself inside and you lose the mission.

Should you succeed, however, you are treated to one of the coolest ending sequences in the history of Star Wars games.”

“I have to say upfront that I’m a bit of a Star Wars agnostic. I’ve watched all the movies and played about a dozen of the games, so while I have both an appreciation and a fair understanding of the lore, I enjoy the games as a gamer, and not so much as a Star Wars fan (if that makes sense). You can say that I recognise the Force, but I doubt the power of its influence at a personal level. Having said that, I really enjoyed Star Wars Battlefront, and while it was originally a little thin on content (this has been addressed with a lot of post-game support) it was a lot of fun to play, and is probably rivaled only by Rogue Squadron and the average but deliciously fun Star Wars Episode 1: racer (I played both on the Nintendo 64). Blasphemy? Perhaps. But not all of us are into KOTOR.”

“I’ve always been a fan of the Star Wars Saga, never a hardcore fan though, but enough of a fan to easily geek out whenever a Star Wars themed game was announced. My first memory of a Star Wars game was the Rebel Assault series, which I still played with a joystick; Never really progressing past the training level, I only found out there was more to it than flying like 2 decades later!

My fondest memory though has to be from Star Wars Force Unleashed, the first of the series – Where you, playing as Galen Marek, use the force to tug a Star Destroyer out of Orbit and into the face of a planet. Now it must be known that a Star Destroyer is a 6 km long, Imperial I-Class Capital Ship and Starkiller literally rips it from orbit! It was a mind blowing experience and by far the greatest show of Force power I’ve experienced in any Star Wars medium!”

“My favourite Star Wars gaming moment was probably in Knights of the Old Republic when you found out you were the big bad guy all along, and subsequently got offered to continue being that bad guy (or not) by kicking your former apprentice’s ass”

“To me, memories of Star Wars games are often bound to multiplayer madness, from hunt the Jedi in Jedi Outcast, to the stupidly clunky Jedi Power Battles on PS1, to Battlefront and even Galactic Battlegrounds at LANs. But all of those come second to KOTOR.

Knights of the Old Republic was (if I remember rightly) my first really sprawling, narrative-heavy RPG. I borrowed it from a friend and considered not giving it back. I’d never imagined I’d get so attached to the characters, especially grumpy old man Jolee Bindo and sassy assassin (assassyn) droid HK-47. I’ve never been happier to be called a meatbag.”

“My best Star Wars game memories came from playing Jedis. The first experience I ever got was from Jedi Knight. Kyle Katarn’s transformation into one from a mere mercenary was great. The physics engine the game used was way ahead of its time, and flinging storm trooper around while using force lightning is an experience I’ve yet to replicate. Jedi Academy, which came out not too long after introduced the double-bladed lightsabres, one of which Darth Maul used in Episode 1. Couple that with the “g_saber_realistic_combat 1” command, and we got what was arguably the best Jedi simulator created.

The last, and the best memory, at least for me, was the KOTOR series. The battle between the light side and dark side was a stark contrast to the movies, yet here the possibility of being grey was a big one. There was no renegade or paragon option. Defeating a Sith who attacked you led to greater losses later on. Saving people didn’t necessary mean they lived, and when the consequences manifested I was left with regret. I have yet to experience the levels of immersion that the KOTOR and the Jedi Knight games offered, nor the same refinement in gameplay.”
