TV Series News: Introducing the New Doctor Who Companion

We finally know who will be joining the Doctor as his Companion in 2017: Pearl Mackie as Bill. While we’ve known for a while that the role had been filled, and names had been floating around there wasn’t anything official. Pearl’s acting resume is rather thin, with only two previous tv appearances, but from what we’ve seen in the short announcement clip, she’s going to fit right into the role.

Fingers crossed she isn’t another Martha, a fantastic companion that was wasted due to lack of fan interest, or worse yet another Clara; totally wasted because of Steven Moffat’s terrible choices throughout his run. Yes, I’m one of those Whovians that can’t deal with Moffat as the showrunner. A common theme for Capaldi’s Doctor has been call backs to previous Doctors; from his choice of clothing to the look of the TARDIS, as well as his companions and foes. So it’s not surprising that Bill has strong hints of being another Ace, a fan favorite companion.

I won’t like when I say I’m a bit disappointed in that we are getting yet another young female Companion; a running trend in New Who sadly. The last male to travel on the TARDIS long term was Captain Jack Harkness and that was 8 years ago! Ignoring that though we finally have a person of color as our companion again. A welcome change to the lack of diversity that has plagued Moffat’s run as showrunner and hopefully a sign of things to come.
