Full disclosure, this review is coming to you from someone who does not enjoy anything about racing simulators. I can see the appeal of a realistic and technical racing game. When you read what I have to say about Asetto Corsa, remember all these opinions about the game were generated under a high volume of salt.

Graphics:

I would consider it’s presentation the worst point of Assetto Corsa, overall the game doesn’t look horrible but it doesn’t look like a current gen game. Especially after recent triple a titles showing off what the PS4 can really do, I believe our expectations have been raised slightly in this regard. Trees and surrounding details often look flat. Lighting also can have unpredictable effects, starting a race off in a black car can lead to a golden car, you will think you are on the red carpet and about to start an internet debate about color.

Animations on the cars and the “humans” in the world though contains details I didn’t expect, i.e. you can see your driver changing gears. I don’t know if this is a standard for racing simulators but it was a nice touch. These sorts of touches can definitely add to the immersion especially when playing in first person.

Tracks and cars:

Assetto Corsa definitely has a wide array of vehicles from compact Abarth cars to F1 Ferrari’s and with more to be added in the future. All handle as you would expect a high performance car to, getting used to the different grade of cars though is where the real challenge will come in. When it comes to tracks there are all the famous circuits from around the world, my favorite definitely being the 20km Nordschleife that forms part of the Nürburgring. They clearly spent a lot of development time recreating favorite circuits from all around the world to the most minute of details.

Gameplay:

This is where Assetto Corsa really shines, it has to be the best racing simulator I have ever played. Understanding the inertia points and traction control of your vehicles is a must if you want to drive well. For a casual racing enthusiast you may find the game frustrating and not enjoy it. For the racing enthusiast though you will most likely have tons of fun and get a rewarding experience. I will admit when I managed to get the breaking point around a few turns right and zoomed out of them I was extremely happy with myself.

The perfect lap guide line though seems to be hard coded for a track, this is a problem as the different acceleration cars and control on cars means this line is only valid for a few cars and you’ll have to adapt to it based on your vehicle yourself.

As a racing simulator Assetto is top notch, it falls short graphically and it has a very niche draw.
