“To achieve great things, two things are needed: A plan, and not quite enough time.” – Leonard Bernstein
I believe this quote encapsulates everything there is to a game like civilization, no matter how much time you plan on spending in it, it will always end up devouring your life and keeping you playing for “One last turn”
Getting a hands on preview of this game is an extreme privilege for me and I must say I am enjoying it thoroughly. The preview code doesn’t come with all the game has to offer but definitely enough to whet my pallet. A seemingly small download of 3.5 GB(expands to 7.5) allowed me access to a single player Prince(Normal) difficulty game that introduced me to half the available leaders of the full game. Cracking on I saw the new art style, first hand and up close.
Struggling to decide the path I wanted to try take to victory did end up meaning the downfall of my civilization. As with previous games unless you change your path to ruling early enough you tend to fall behind. I managed to place second in Culture and Science by the time those damn Greeks won after 500 turns.
The voice acting on the quotes are definitely delightful and add that feel of accomplishment to the game, more so it gives you a reminding chill that “Winter is coming”. (In case that reference made you lose your head, the narrator is voiced by Sean Bean).
The additions of districts in your cities as opposed to normal upgrading of tiles serves a greater purpose of giving Great people in history somewhere to compose their Great works, such as William Shakespear setting up in your Amphitheater to pencil down Romeo and Juliet. (He only managed to accomplish this in my Industrial Age). Each Great person provides a different bonus from being a great military leader, to a fantastic merchant that can claim a luxury resource far from home.
My final thoughts on the game for now though, I am not disappointed and cannot wait to get back into the fray and try claim a victory that will make the ancestors proud. As I discover more things I will try keep everyone in the loop and be sure to catch videos and streams coming shortly!
