A story set in the late 70’s, filled with action, drama, conspiracy and of course comedy. A winning combination. We see the likes of Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling searching for a girl who seems to be mixed up in a major plot from car manufacturers to continue polluting our Earth. Fear not though, I wouldn’t say there is a message being portrayed during the movie, more a message relating to what makes people “Nice guys”. (Also as this movie does contain nudity please be wary about kids watching)

What I thought

The movie begins in a really weird place as we are introduced to the first character caught up in the conspiracy. As the tale goes on we are introduced to Holland, a Private I in search of Amelia. The case started as a high profile case, the kind that gets your name in the papers (remember this is the late 70’s, this would be great advertising). We switch it up as we meet a man named Haely, an enforcer of sorts, he will take any job protecting those that can’t do it themselves. This might seem like a buddy cop movie without the cops and you would be absolutely right. The relationship between the two evolves, with a little help from Hollands daughter who always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It is a fun way to spend a few hours and there is enough action to keep the action fan happy. Certain parts of the backstory of the characters is never fully embelished on but seeing as that is not the focal point of the movie I can forgive it. Those moments would only slow down the interesting parts of the film.

What others thought

“Is this a family film? No way. Does it include scenes that some may find painful to watch? You bet. Will you be entertained? Thoroughly.”

Calvin Wilson – St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“The Nice Guys has a nice feel: just slick enough to keep from falling apart, just brutal enough to keep from seeming inconsequential. “

David Edelstein – New York Magazine (Vulture)

“I’m not sure I’ve laughed harder all year than at Gosling in a bathroom stall, accidentally dropping a lit cigarette down his pants leg.”

Kimberley Jones – Austin Chronicle

Although certain points may seem anti-climactic it definitely leads on to better times and remember "You will be happy"
