Polygod is a rogue-like old school first person game with randomly generated maps. Firstly this game is very unforgiving. It has a brutal learning curve and you will most certainly die a lot of times. Once you die you cannot reload, like in most rogue-like games, death is very unforgiving. I found this frustrating, reminding me of the days when saved games was only a fantasy, after a while of playing I became more intrigued in what the game had to offer. The maps are randomly generated on each play through, you cannot finish the level by simply remembering where the enemies where the previous round. The only way to become better is by mastering the systems of the game.
Polygod starts off with little explanation. You start in the same area each time before you enter a portal that leads to the randomly generated maps. In this starting area you meet some strange, idol like characters. They give you weird cryptic messages that leave you with more questions than answers. After entering the portal you get dropped from high, giving you a quick overview of the level. After years of modern gaming it felt different having the gun in the center of the screen, similar to the first Doom or Duke Nukem games. Each enemy behaves different, the movement speeds and health vary. Some enemies can shoot multiple projectiles at once and even charge towards you unexpectedly resulting in many quick deaths. Every time you kill an enemy you acquire a soul. Each level has numerous altars where you can exchange your collected souls for a variety of power ups or blessings. These range from health to weapon upgrades and more. After each level you first have to defeat a boss in order to progress further.
After a few hours of playing you’ll learn which power ups to combine to create unique and powerful effects. Although death is permanent each new games comes with a unique level and an interesting experience. Polygod is an interesting rogue like game with a steep learning curve, bound to keep you entertained for days.
