It’s always nice when a beloved console classic makes its way to PC. I know I have missed out on quite a few amazing games having only come to own consoles in the last generation, so the trend of them making their way to PC is fantastic. The only problem is these are often touch and go affairs and in the case of Tales of Symphonia, you’d be better off trying to play the original release.

When it was announced that Tales of Zestiria was going to be released on PC and bring with it Tales of Symphonia at a later date PC JRPG could do nothing else but wait in anticipation. Once the release of Zestiria came along and brought not only a good game, but a well done port, PC players couldn’t wait for what Symphonia would bring a couple of months later. Tales of Symphonia is a highly regarded title and so PC players couldn’t wait to get a nice version of the game. Those hopes were however dashed when the game came out today.

From typos to random crashes, the PC port of Tales of Symphonia is a mess. To start them off, the games internal resolution is locked at 720p and is also locked at 30fps. The 720p lock is somewhat forgivable, seeing as it is quite an old game, but having the gameplay locked at 30fps when the game ran at 60fps on the GameCube makes little to no sense. Apart from that the different languages are broken due to the wrong font being used and some parts aren’t even translated. The game also partially uses PS3 button icons, so that means the PC port is a port of the PS3 port, essentially a mess of porting. It is also a Steam game but using the Steam Overly could lead to the game crashing so there’s really no way to win here.

Besides all that, there are some rather comical issues going on in this port. The game, for some odd reason, limits you to 6 slave slots with all the localisation data saved in a simple .txt file. The game also makes use of some strange DRM that that creates a new .exe every time the game starts.

So all in all, if you were thinking of picking up the PC port of Tales of Symphonia, you probably shouldn’t. If you pre-ordered Zestiria and got this port for free or if you bought Symphonia, I’m so sorry for what you’ve been forced to endure. I hope the game is fixed sometime soon.

The best person to offer the worst opinion. Paul's interests include adding 100 hour JRPGs to his backlog and dark walks through dungeons. You'll probably find him rambling on about old man Nintendo or that crazy newfangled eSports thingy.
