Locally we have quite a few Facebook groups for the games we enjoy. From League of Legends to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, South Africa has quite a few dedicated gaming communities. These groups are pretty much open to anyone locally and are often best avoided. I don’t know why, but for some reason most of our local communities end up just becoming incredibly toxic environments where you unfortunately often find the worst the local gaming community has to offer.

And then there is the Hearthstone community. From humble begginings, starting with only a couple beta participants, to growing into a pretty large, healthy community, Hearthstone South Africa is comprised of mostly friendly and helpful Hearthstone players from around South Africa. Now this community has basically brought itself to where it is now due to the dedication and passion the players have for the game. This energy that has been put in has helped the local Hearthstone scene tremendously, so much so that someone decided to join the Facebook group.

Now obviously people joining the group is nothing special, but who decided to join the on the 7th of April 2016 is of utmost importance.

…Today marks the day where the Facebook group has received attention from Blizzard. This morning a request to join the Facebook group was received from Wei Yue, the Associate Program Manager for Hearthstone. We, as a community have achieved quite a lot over the past years, let us hope that Wei Yue can assist us with this and potentially get some of the local talent featured on the international scene! – Francois Mouton, Hearthstone South Africa Admin

So if I’m not mistaken, does that mean Blizzard has noticed us locally? Surely this is some elaborate ruse and Wei Yue is probably just dropping by to find out where he can get a couple of games in when he decides to visit on holiday?

Thank you for the warm welcome, Francois!

I am actually working on something bigger to literally put South Africa on the Hearthstone map as we speak. Stay tuned; there will be exciting news very soon! – Wei Yue, Associate Program Manager, eSports Blizzard

Oh, I guess not, this is the real deal. I guess, first of all, some congratulations are in order. Well done to each and every member of the local Hearthstone community, from the tournament organisers to even the participants, without your active participation, I doubt the local community would be sitting in the position it is in now. While no one is really sure what Wei Yue has planned just yet, we can only assume it’ll grow the scene incredibly and put South Africa on the international Hearthstone map.

Blizzard has taken note of the effort the local Hearthstone community has put in to growing the game and is looking to return the favour. This, in all honesty, couldn’t have happened to a better community locally and I sincerely hope that they use this international interest as motivation to further improve local events. I can’t wait to see where we go from here.

The best person to offer the worst opinion. Paul's interests include adding 100 hour JRPGs to his backlog and dark walks through dungeons. You'll probably find him rambling on about old man Nintendo or that crazy newfangled eSports thingy.
