If you were hoping to get your hands on a new Nintendo console before the end of the year, you’re unfortunately out of luck. Even though Nintendo is in a bit of a strange place at the moment, it looks like they’re going to make the more strategic approach and delay the launch of their next console.

It was announced in a financial briefing that Nintendo’s next console, currently going by it’s codename NX, will be released worldwide in March 2017. While most Nintendo fans were hoping to hear about the upcoming console at E3 this year and have it in their homes towards the end of the year, it seems Nintendo is going to be delaying the console and glossing over it completely this show. That doesn’t mean it’s all doom and gloom, they will be focusing on another pressing issue for the company.

Instead of hearing about the new console this year we will be hearing about the much anticipated next entry in the Legend of Zelda series. It has been confirmed that the game will release simultaneously on both Wii U and NX. So it looks like we’ll finally get some information on the game that Nintendo fans have been eagerly anticipating for almost too long and while it is stealing the limelight from any potential NX reveals, it does mean that Nintendo should be able to give us quite a bit of information on the project.

While this news does arguably put Nintendo in a strange place, it is unfortunately the only feasible move for them to make. Even though we’ve already had to deal with some pretty wild NX rumours, we’ve also had the PS4.NEO and Xbox One+1=2 rear their complicated heads. This means that Nintendo is, potentially, trying to get ahead of competition that is already going to be outdated and so it just makes sense for them to wait it out a little bit. This does mean that Nintendo is going to have to keep the Wii U on life-support for a little longer, but we all know that there are a couple of simple things that they can do in order to keep it’s unloved console ticking for just a bit longer.

So while we are finally hearing about the next Nintendo console from the source itself, it’s not really the news we may have wanted. While Nintendo does have a lot of interesting things going for it at the moment, do you think it’s enough? Let us know your thoughts on the current NX situation and whether the ‘delay’ bodes well for Nintendo below.

The best person to offer the worst opinion. Paul's interests include adding 100 hour JRPGs to his backlog and dark walks through dungeons. You'll probably find him rambling on about old man Nintendo or that crazy newfangled eSports thingy.
