I have a little bit of an awkward confession to make. Even though I’m Geek Node’s resident Nintendo fanboy, I only played my first Kirby game at the beginning of 2015. I managed to pick up Kirby: Triple Deluxe for a ridiculous price and fell in love with it from the moment I put it in my 3DS. It’s not that the game had a major impact on me or was of any particular challenge, but the cute adventure just played as something that I haven’t experienced in quite a while. It was a fun game for the sake of being fun and when Kirby: Planet Robobot was announced I was hoping for, oddly enough, more of the same. Thankfully the latest Kirby adventure has managed to deliver exactly that, while still managing to hang on to the same charm and whimsy.

Filled with bright colours, charming sounds and simple gameplay mechanics, Kirby: Planet Robobot is probably the most fun I’ve had gaming this year. It’s difficult to put my finger on why exactly this is the case, but nonetheless my time with the game was incredibly enjoyable. While there isn’t much of a narrative and that which there is is fairly inconsequential, Planet Robobot managed to keep me hooked by having some incredibly enjoyable and fulfilling gameplay. I feel like this can be attributed to how much Kirby sucks.

That’s probably not the first or last time someone will make as silly a joke as that, but I’m new to Kirby games so let me have my fun. Kirby is able to copy enemy abilities by inhaling them which makes for some interesting ways to power up the character. While the various abilities don’t necessarily have the biggest impact on the game, they’re still incredibly fun to play around with. I often found myself switching from my favourite abilities to new ones just to see what would happen. Even the Robobot Armour, which could have just been tacked on, is incredibly fun to play with. While it does use a lot of the same abilities as Kirby, they seem to take a different life in the Robobot and create some fun and interesting changes to the gameplay. It’s still, at its core, a stock standard platformer, but it does enough differently to keep itself relevant and enjoyable.

Still, while the gameplay manages to deliver a lot of this game’s charm, but without the the pure whimsy of Planet Robobot’s aesthetic I don’t think it would have been half as enjoyable. All the bright colours and happy sound effects make everything about it feel care-free, but still manages to hold one’s attention. Most games we deal with have very drab and lifeless worlds, but Planet Robobot’s scenes are filled with wonder thanks to the small details that are on display as well as the overall mood the game presents. While Kirby is indeed on an adventure to save Dreamland, it didn’t feel dire and forced, but still compels the player to stay at it.

Even though Kirby: Planet Robobot may sound incredibly simplistic at first, it still has a lot going for it. The are many collectibles and hidden secrets for players to hunt down and unlock. The game is in no way light on content and is definitely well worth the time and effort you’ll find yourself putting into the game. All of this comes together to create an enjoyable experience that may not change your world, but it will definitely come as a much needed change of pace from everything else we experience in modern gaming.

All in all, Kirby: Planet Robobot comes together to form a package that is an absolute pleasure to play. While one might be willing to overlook the game due to its simplistic nature, you’ll probably be doing yourself a great disservice. I wouldn’t say that this game is an absolute must play for anyone, but you should absolutely love yourself and allow yourself to enjoy the wonder and whimsy of Kirby: Planet Robobot.
