By now, what is there left to say really? I can’t even rehash my introduction from my LEGO Marvel’s Avengers review about LEGO games being pretty consistent, even if it would have made for a bit of meta humour. In all honesty, there is very little that draws one to the LEGO games other than “oh hey, this looks cute” which is a bit of a shame due to them being quite enjoyable even if they’re very samey. We’ve been playing the same formula with a different coat of paint for quite some time now and while we crucify other franchises for doing the same thing, LEGO gets a free pass. Why is this, one might think? Well, for starters, I can’t say I’ve exactly grown tired of the games and while they may seem quite similar at their core, they still manage to make enjoyable changes where they can.

So you may not have heard about it, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a pretty big cinematic production that released at the end of 2015 that may or may not have been a pretty important cultural event. The world was exposed to a whole new generation of Star Wars and many a new fan was ushered into the incredible universe that is Star Wars. So naturally, much like the original films which sparked the creation of the LEGO franchise, Episode VII had to get the movie played back to us in the form of LEGO. Fortunately though, the movie is quite well re-enacted in the game and the added humour is always a welcomed addition to the game. We are always given an entertaining experience in the LEGO games and The Force Awakens is no different.

The problem is is that production value is only one part of the entertainment factor of the game. The gameplay of LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens is mostly what one expects it to be, with the usual button mashing combat and having to build weird and wonderful gadgets to progress. This time, however, the game manages to be a little bit different even if it could have taken its own changes a little more seriously. While it does add some interesting new aspects to the gameplay, it’s ultimately still the same game at the end of the day. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, they’re sticking to their tried and tested formula which has yet to fail them. LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens is as fun to play as ever, but I hope that Traveller’s Tales build on the more diverse aspects of this iteration in the inevitable next one.

But in the end, what are we left with? Well, while the game could have done well with a little more exploration into the new gameplay mechanics it presents, it’s still as fun as always. It’s definitely quite difficult to be disappointed in LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens as it simply just charms its way into your heart. It’s nothing more and nothing less than fun and while it will in no way change your life, there are far worse games you could spend your time on.

It's enjoyable, just accept that. If you haven't picked up a LEGO game in a while you can do far worse than picking up LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Just go ahead and enjoy yourself for once.

The best person to offer the worst opinion. Paul's interests include adding 100 hour JRPGs to his backlog and dark walks through dungeons. You'll probably find him rambling on about old man Nintendo or that crazy newfangled eSports thingy.
