My journey back to Rapture

For some reason, I can never just replay games from my childhood without it having the same effect on me that I can imagine a time machine having. Instantly I’m back in my parents house, totally ignoring the perfectly good couch and rather opting to lie on the really scratchy carpet that was in the sitting room on my tummy, a bag chips and a bottle of Mountain Dew right next to me (this was before anyone cared so much about being healthy) my trusty PlayStation controller in hand (not the one that’s analog stick felt sorta ‘sticky’ – probably caused by all the chips and drinks – but that was Player 2’s problem, not mine) totally oblivious to the rest of world, the pain in my fast bruising elbows, and carpet imprinted body.

This past week I’ve made that trip, gone back almost 10 years in time, to find everything is exactly how I remember it being back then. I swear the air even smells the same, and it’s FANTASTIC.

Now for those select poor, unfortunate souls who wonder around us, never having experienced the unforgettable-ness that is BioShock before, to you I say: STOP WASTING TIME AND GO PLAY IT!

With the launch of this collection you really have no reason NOT to play, It looks exactly how I remember it looking back in the day (which was really amazing and one of the best looking games for the time) and yet brand new.

Since that day that BioShock came into and changed our lives – for the better mind you, back in 2007, the series has birthed two sequels; 2010’s BioShock 2 and 2013’s BioShock Infinite.

The Collection takes all three games, and their complete collection of DLC’s and packages them into what is by far the most definitive way to play the BioShock series and experience the story.

What you get in the Collection:

• All three games Remastered in 1080p.

• BioShock main game and all single player DLC.

• BioShock 2 main game and all single player DLC.

• BioShock Infinite main game and all single player DLC.

• Director’s Commentary: Imagining BioShock, featuring Ken Levine and Shawn Robertson

It’s hardly surprising, that it’s while playing the original game that you notice the remaster to the graphics the most. They took a decade old game and manage to make it fit into what I’m accustomed to seeing today, with very few moments that I was aware of the games advanced age, and in those moments that I was – it was the way the game controlled and not the way it looked that gave it away.

While it’s defiantly not the flawless AAA graphics that we can get now, it still holds its own in this modern world and Rapture has never been more awe-inspiring and beautiful, than what it is now.

In the case of BioShock 2 the changes are much less obvious, and yet you still can’t help but notice them. It’s the small tweaks to the texture and lighting that make all the difference in this case, also the slight fix that they brought in to both this, and the previous game, rectifying the physics that were, at times, dare I say, dodgy – was a welcome and noticed change, especially in 2 where the control system was just that much more advanced that the buggy physics could really stand out.

With BioShock Infinite you’re looking at a game that is barely 3 years old, other than a slight boost to the frame rate on the console version, there is really very little difference between the original and The Collection version. But with that being said, the frame rate really does just help give the game that ever so slight ‘smooth’ look and feel while playing, and that is always welcome.

All in all, this Collection did nothing if not help to remind me why I loved the BioShock series in the first place and help to rekindle that flame in my heart again now. BUT it is also with that same heart that I must admit, in some aspects I felt let down.

When I was finishing up the first game, I felt pleasantly rewarded for my time with the inclusion of the new Directors Commentary video series that gets periodically unlocked as you play, but then for BioShock 2 or Infinite? Nothing… Just nothing…

After the inclusion of new content from the first game, I really wanted more and they just didn’t include it.

If I’m honest I also kinda missed the multiplayer that was removed from this version of BioShock 2, but that is really just me nitpicking to find something wrong, rather than it being a major loss to the collection itself.

My journey back to Rapture For some reason, I can never just replay games from my childhood without it having the same effect on me that I can imagine a time machine having.
