Whenever I’m asked about how my rAge LAN experience was, I always find myself at a loss for words. This is partly because of how much happens in such a short space of time making it rather overwhelming to talk about and partly because explaining the experience will just never do it justice. rAge LAN is there to be experienced first hand.

When I sat down to write this article I found myself trying to decide what my favorite thing about the rAge LAN was and also what keeps me coming back every single year (rAge LAN 2016 is my group’s 10th rAge LAN) the one thing that my mind kept coming back to was… the people. Nothing beats that feeling of ‘reunion’ that you get in the queue, seeing and catching up with all the familiar faces that you only see once a year.

rAge LAN has this proper sense of community, a group of people united by nothing else but their pure love and passion for gaming.

For my friend group, and many many others (see picture above) rAge starts already on Thursday morning, the feeling of excitement and energy already in the queue is insane. Everyone just camping out, eating food, laughing out loud and playing music – it’s this feeling that sets the tone for the whole event and makes rAge LAN truly special.

One of the other really awesome things about being there from Thursday already is having the chance to see the diversity of the groups as they arrive, from teenagers to grandparents, everybody is there together.

And in a way, a lot of us grew up together. When you’ve been at rAge LAN for as many years as we have then you know that its gone from your parents dropping you off, to FINALLY being able to drive yourself, to the realization that driving yourself sucks and then rather carpooling, to bringing along significant others, getting married and finally talking about our kids. But through all of these major life changes we are still all brought together for 72 hours of pure madness.

The fence picture above might look peaceful and quiet now but that is where true friendships in the queue are tested, if you’re one of the people that have been there since Thursday morning then you’ve now been awake and at rAge LAN for 19 odd hours already, so when they start talking about opening the doors to the dome (usually between 4/5 am) this is where tempers start to flare and people start to stand together for the common cause. Friendships are forged here, and enemies are made.

Each year rAge LAN brings new improvements and new surprises, and also new people. This year there was a record 2,330 people enjoying the LAN, effectively living together in the Dome for 72 hours.

And if that number isn’t enough to make you realize just how huge that turnout is, I played CSGO while there and for a good 30 matches, almost every single person on either side of the teams had @rAge attached to their usernames.

This year the internet was at an all time high, with great and stable speeds throughout the LAN, an extra batch of everyone’s favorite bean bags, and coffee and energy drinks being sold 24/7.

rAge LAN exists as a great place to not be seen by any gender, race or age stereotypes, everybody is there, everybody is sharing the same experience and everybody is seen just as they are, as gamers.

2017 promises to be an even bigger year for rAge and its partners. Dates for rAge LAN in Johannesburg are confirmed for 6-8 October 2017 at The Ticketpro Dome at Northgate, and I’ll defiantly be there on Thursday again, enjoying that queue reunion.
