So little known fact, a few years ago, DC Comics released a line of statues inspired by the proliferation of the Manga / Anime across the geekosphere called “Ame-Comi”. The design style of was based on Japanese manga and anime and the series/ line title is derived from the phrase “American Comics”. The Ame-Comi universe presented a unique take on the women of the DCU in a world where only females have super powers–heroes and villains alike.

As a result of the popularity of the line, DC realised that it was sitting on a potential gold mine and decided to up the ante’ and released a digital format run of comic books set in the Ame-Comi Universe.

Somewhere along the way, and due to the admittedly high costs of the designer figures originally released, DC collectibles released a line of smaller figures in the “Ame-Comi Heroine Mini PVC Figure” line.

In today’s review I will be looking at the DC Direct Ame-Comi Heroine Series 1 Mini PVC Batgirl Figure.

Alrighty – here we go.

Given that this is mini statues, we will as usual have to forego the Three A’s and narrow our discussion to the Two A’s ie Aesthetics and Aish-Factor… (Still working on a better criteria set for statue reviews guys – it’s been a rough couple days).

AESTHETICS

Now, like most artistic expressions of a character, I reckon that this figure will either be a hit or miss. As they stand, both characters have the classic marking of a Manga/ Anime inspires figure with the rather large, defined and almost unnatural … eyes (I totally meant eyes).

Batgirl is rendered in a sort of “super- sentai” ensemble with a skin tight outfit, adorned with numerous pouches, clips, straps and an oversized visor. The cape has a dramatic flourish to it and the overall pose is looks pretty cool. I wasn’t quite sure whether she was posed to be seen as giving someone the finger or not – she isn’t (I was slightly disappointed).

For reasons I can’t quite understand, she is depicted holding hat appears to be a anime-esque baby bat (the animal not the sports accessory). A little consult with Professor. Google reveals that the bat is supposed to represent a plush bat figure that accompanies the larger statue that this mini statue is based on. Not my idea of a great feature but okay…

The sculpted details on the character is nicely done with the fairly fine details sculpted on across the figure making up to a lesser of greater extent for the details lost on the face sculpt itself.

I was disappointed by the paint applications on the face sculpt of the figure as I feel that this could have been executed better if they added in a bit more sculpting around the eye sockets and some heavier black paint to achieve a more “smokey – eyed” look. Honestly, when compared with sme of the other mang/ anime inspired figures I have seen over the years including the Bishoujo line form Kotobukiya, I think DC Collectibles might have dropped the ball just a little here.

While on the topic of paint details, I think the figure would have benefited from some light dry brushing especially on the sculpted hair details (which is quite nicely sculpted itself) which loses some of the vibrancy the manufacturer was aiming for with the figure.

Notwithstanding my gripes relating to the head sculpt – I think that the overall aesthetic appeal of this figure lies in the unique looks presented for the character. This to my mind adds a nice variation which makes the characters appear fresh – yet linked to their classic iterations.

The statue stands at roughly 5.5” (ie circa 14cm) which while seemingly small, is not a bad size for the figure itself.

The figure is packaged with a standard disk base with a single peg. I found that there is a slight tilt to the figure when displayed, though nothing that can’t be straightened out with a bit of hot water.

AISH! – Factor

I was lucky enough to get this figure (together with the Poison Ivy Mini Statue in the same line) in an instore special at a local comic book store. As a result the price point I got them at was worth the money.

Having done a little bit of extra research, I think the biggest challenge this figure (and ostensibly other figures in this line) experiences is that the figures are essentially miniaturised versions of much larger, more detailed figures.

As a result and due to the diminished scale, there are some features which probably didn’t translate as well to the mini version.

This I believe is the only reason why there were as many quality control issues that I noticed on my figures. That being said, these niggling details do unfortunately detract a little from the overall appeal of this piece.

Omy end, the main issues I noted were of course the slightly off-centered paint applications in certain details such as fingernails and toe nails and my general issue with the paint/ sculpting on the face.

If these issues could be addressed (probably through some minor customising work later) this figure can easily move from the “Eish” to “Aish!” category.

While I will have to pose the figure in a way that will detract a little from the issues I found, I do feel that this particular figure is a nice addition to a Batman figure collection.

It is a cute and quirky addition to a collection in general, especially if you are a fan of Anime and Manga as an art form.

I guess this is a good example of the notion that a figure is worth more as a whole versus the sum of its parts.

This is an older release, so get it while you can – though just wait till it is on sale.
