The world of fandoms, collecting and geek culture are a broad mosaic to say the least.

Men and women all over the world indulging their fantasies, inner child and appetites.

In recent years geek counter culture has seen a marked increase in popularity, so much so that what used to be the “geek counter culture” has transitioned into what is now popular culture.

Yes… the “good old days” (note the dripping sarcasm) of being goaded, badgered and bullied for being a little different.

That is all in the past now as we are living in these great times- if for no other reason than because there has never been this much awesome media and merchandise available for the consumer.

It’s magic!

As one would imagine, this perception shift has resulted in the creation of a new subculture where geeks are granted some of the deference historically reserved for the jocks.

The question then arises as to what is the position here in the South African context? Is this global phenomenon equally prevalent in South Africa? Assuming it is, is there a unique “South African” spin to the South African Geek scene that can be distinguished from the rest of the world?

Well, those are exactly the questions that friend of the site Chris Erodotos Jordan explores in his latest project entitled “ Black, White and Everything In Between: A South African Comic ”.

This five-part podcast series sees Jordan hunt down and chat to South African Cartoonists, illustrators, creators, animators and geek provocateurs in the community and tries answer the question of whether or not there is a golden thread of “South Africanism” that distinguishes the local scene from anywhere else.

There are currently two episodes of the series available for streaming via Soundcloud.

The first episode is an interview where Jordan chats to comic book wunderkund Jason Masters, a local born artist. Masters is prolific for his work on titles for WildStorm, DC, Marvel and most recently at Dynamite Comics.

Jordan bypasses the fluff and gets right to the nitty gritty in a robust and highly entertaining interview.

The second episode is also an interview where I had the privilege of sharing my humble views on a range of topics.

Among other things, Jordan and I question notions of the existence of “posers” and some insight into collecting generally.

The tongue in cheek series covers (as the name suggests) a myriad of topics.

These range between:

1. How Jason Masters dealt with a typically South African Mum response to his chosen vocation instead of a “real job”, and

2. DarthZadyBun’s critique of the state of collecting in South Africa and why some folks need Prozac.

As highlighted above, the first two episodes are available on Soundcloud at the links below for free. However this is for a limited time only!

Have a listen and be sure to follow Jordan to get updates relating to the upcoming episodes.

Episode one is available here .

Episode two is available here .

Zaid is a story teller, traveller, artist, entertainer and comic culture geek of note.

Powered by chocolate, and guided by an ever growing bucket (and collectibles) list, he finances his addiction to geek merchandise, comic books, action figures and all the cold cast porcelain and PVC pieces of heaven he can buy by giving (mostly) legal advice. He is also rumoured to have once eaten an entire pack of Marie Biscuits with a single mug of Five Roses Tea.

Witnesses deny the incident.
