The second most epic line in sci-fi geek cinema history (except for the Trekkies) is “a long time ago in a galaxy far far away…”

The most epic line by extension is of course “may the force be with you”

Which brings us to one of my favourite days of the year…

Star Wars day!

For everyone who has been curled up in a ball of Bantha dung the last few years, Star Wars Day celebrates the Star Wars franchise.

May 4th was chosen for the easy pun on the catchphrase “May the Force be with you” as “May the Fourth be with you”.

Sadly the celebration has not reached its full potential here on this side of the equator.

We hope to change that in the years to come. For now though, I thought we should take the opportunity to talk about some of the awesome geek merchandise from Kotobukiya that is currently available.

Star Wars Kylo Ren ArtFX Statue (1/6 Scale)

The break out star of STAR WARS Episode VII: The Force Awakens (in my opinion) Kylo Ren looks great in this beautifully sculpted 1/6 scale statue.

Poised for the attack and standing on a snow-themed base sculpted to hint at the shape of Darth Vader’s destroyed helmet this looks to be a pretty impressive piece.

With the ARTFX line’s easy snap-fit assembly, Kylo Ren is ready to display in seconds and features his unique lightsaber (with LED light up features).

Star Wars Rogue One K-2SO ARTFX+ Statue

One of the highlights of Rogue One was the introduction of a new (what I call) “main action” droid.

“Kaytoo” is a former Imperial droid who was reprogrammed to serve the Rebellion, and has “no filter”.

To my mind this character is just as memorable as iconic C-3pO and R2-D2 – which is saying something.

This release by Kotobukiya is beautifully sculpted in 1/10 scale with all the details in place. The statue is screen accurate and features a light up function as well. This was previously only seen in ArtFX statues and not the cheaper ArtFX+ statues.

For fans of the franchise who are less enamoured by the main characters and are looking to build up their own Empire/ First Order there are also a series of different Troopers to choose from, including:

Rogue One Shoretrooper Two Pack ArtFX+ Statues

These statues include multiple arm and weapon parts allowing for the creation of dynamic action poses to change up your display.

First Order Snowtrooper & Flametrooper Two Pack ArtFX+ Statues

The Snowtrooper and The Flametrooper both feature reinforced armour featuring thick gloves, bodysuit and of course a distinctive helmet with glare-reducing eye slit.

An interesting touch for the Flametrooper is the inclusion of a special freestanding flame jet special effect part for a dynamic action display.

Star Wars Death Trooper Two Pack ArtFX+ Statues

Another lot from Rogue One, the most sinister and distinctive comes to you now in a pair with this set. Elite soldiers in the Galactic Empire, the Death Troopers wear a unique and singularly menacing version of the classic Stormtrooper armour.

The bottom line

As regular readers know, I am a major fan of Kotobukiya’s works generally and would strongly recommend these products.

The Kylo Ren ArtFX statue is the most impressive of the Star Wars offerings at the moment.

Still though, the Star Wars ARTFX+ Statues are an awesome, cost effective buy.

As far as the statues are concerned, I find that the pre-painted statue kits can be assembled easily in seconds without glue or modelling skill.

The statues also represent good value for money with the included accessories.

The different Troopers featured in this write include several different sculpted extremities as well. This allows you to achieve several different poses with each figure.

Think about it… the poseability you love in an action figure in the scale and detail of a statue.

They stand just over and under 7 inches tall (1/10th scale) in their respective aiming and firing poses and have magnets embedded in the feet for stability on the included metal display bases.

Of course this list is not a closed one and there are a series of other figures that are available (or alternatively available for pre-order). This includes figures featuring Han Solo and Chewbacca, Finn and Rey, Master Yoda and Darth Vader.

Zaid is a story teller, traveller, artist, entertainer and comic culture geek of note.

Powered by chocolate, and guided by an ever growing bucket (and collectibles) list, he finances his addiction to geek merchandise, comic books, action figures and all the cold cast porcelain and PVC pieces of heaven he can buy by giving (mostly) legal advice. He is also rumoured to have once eaten an entire pack of Marie Biscuits with a single mug of Five Roses Tea.

Witnesses deny the incident.
