What It’s About

Anna Beam (Kylie Rogers) lives with a rare, incurable disorder that leaves her unable to digest food. Despite the dire diagnosis, devoted mom Christy (Jennifer Garner) relentlessly searches for a way to save her beloved daughter. Everything changes in an instant when Anna tells an amazing story of a visit to heaven after surviving a headlong tumble into a tree. Her family and doctors become even more baffled when the young girl begins to show signs of recovering from her fatal condition.

What I Thought

The story is a little mediocre, bringing exactly what you’d expect at every moment. You could figure it out entirely just by watching the trailer. I struggled to really connect to the characters and found much of the story a little ‘unbelievable’ and in dire need of some grounding. Miracles From Heaven is yet another ‘miracle’ movie based on a true story that fails to deliver something greater than the rest. I did find it to be mildly inspiring in that ‘you can do it’ sort of way but little else.

The story plays out like every other movie of this type and doesn’t offer you anything new at all at any point as it progresses very steadily to a very tepid ending. Sick girl moves on to ‘not sick any more girl’ moves on to ‘inspiring ending’. That’s pretty much all there is to it and you’ve seen this sort of thing many times before.

Jennifer Garner takes the lead, who hasn’t done much in the last 10 years save for a makeup commercial and that other commercial about hair colour – we find her in the concerned mom role right from the word go and even though it’s a role she seems to easily adapt to, I also found the somber tone of the story to be a little much for her acting capabilities. Co-starring the likes of Queen Latifah, this film hits the ground, tumbles and just keeps on tumbling. Queen Latifah is out of place, underused and is absolutely wasted in her role in this film and quite frankly it’s painful to watch.

Unless you’re heavily into religiously toned ‘true story’ films and love to watch inspirational stuff, this film isn’t for you. It will make a great addition to a Christmas Movie or an Easter Movie collection as the overall theme fits in with the tones of family, faith and love but if you’re eyeing it for a potential addition to any other sort of collection, you’d best steer clear.

What Other People Thought

Garner shines while Queen Latifah is utterly wasted in this rote Christian-themed drama that preaches to the choir – and no one else. – Nigel M Smith

If there are miracles everywhere we look, who wants to waste time on a movie this middling? – Geoff Berkshire

Stretched across nearly two hours, it tells a story that would have been adequately laid out in a 30-second TV spot. – Mark Jenkins

This is a very human-feeling drama that’s still all about God’s priorities, God’s choices and God’s timing. – Bob Hoose

Werner is a strange one...he quotes a lot of things...incoherently I might add, also he reviews stuff from time to time. We still don't truly understand what he is or where he came from.

To quote him verbatim:

Make sure they see my twitter handle so I can get hookers and drugs.
