Jack Sparrow is back in what Disney claims to be the final chapter. Yes! the latest instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean (“POC”) has docked in our port. Very few franchises have the legs to make it past a 3 rd serving but when you have the talent of Johnny Depp (“JD”) the possibilities (and merchandising options) are endless.

I remember the first movie like it was yesterday. JD as the perpetually drunk but “brilliant” pirate Captain Jack Sparrow stole our hearts as easily as he did the treasures. Backed by the charming couple Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan he was a “villain” we couldn’t help but love. Will’s and Jack’s chemistry was undeniably superb. That sword fight in the barn is one of the best scenes in cinema history and set the tone for what has become a mainstay in the franchise.

The story picks up roughly 2 decades later, with Will’s Son all grown up and searching for a way to free his father from his curse. As luck would have it, there is a way ( of course there is, otherwise we wouldn’t have a movie) and of course, it requires the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow. The plot is thickened when the long dead pirate hunter Salazar is set free and resumes his hunt for old Jackie.

With this being the 5 th instalment, most of the characters have already been fleshed out pretty well but the film does take the time to explore them further. Fan favourite Barbossa is drawn into the mix and along with his maniacal charm comes a little more history and the always fun to see his rivalry with Sparrow and the electric banter it brings. Speaking of Jack, a major piece of his shady past is unearthed, in particular how he became captain. This felt very fitting for the character even at the expense of losing some of the elusive mystery behind the legend of Jack Sparrow. The movie’s set pieces are on par with previous instalments albeit with a slightly darker undertone. While the comedic humour and banter seem a little “off-kilter” given the tone, it adds to the “twist-a-second” feel of the franchise.

There is no question that this movie will draw in the crowds, but one can’t help but feel a sense of franchise fatigue as even JD seems to be parodying himself as Jack Sparrow more than anything else. I suppose that with a franchise that is this storied, it’s difficult to keep fresh themes and one ought to enjoy it for its sheer entertainment value more than anything else.

Verdict

The movie isn’t the worst entry in the franchise; that dubious “honour” goes to its predecessor. This movie is the tempered entry that will satisfy that Captain Jack Sparrow craving but won’t inject the same thrill and excitement we felt for the previous entries. The marketing denoted this is the final chapter. I certainly hope so. As much as I want to see another Pirates movie, I don’t think anything made can live up to the glory that was the first. The magic that was the POC franchise was that it created a storyline and continuity for what was originally a ride in Disney Land. It seems fitting then that like the ride, this entry to the franchise brings the ride out to a suitably satisfying end.

The original cast return for one last hoorah, but it just never comes together... much like the cast. A missed opportunity. A decent popcorn flick but never really sets sail.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge is a mixed bag. Its biggest problem is that its makers seem committed to recycling the plot elements found in all four of the previous Pirates of the Caribbean movies. This convolutes the story and makes for a sometimes very tedious viewing experience. On the plus side, Salazar’s Revenge feels like a step-up in all aspects from Pirates #4, On Stranger Tides. The special effects are top-notch, and even the 3D is memorably effective.

Most importantly, Salazar’s Revenge isn’t short on fun. The film has a healthy sense of humour without it feeling strained. This includes Johnny Depp’s performance as Captain Jack, which stays on the right side of weird this time around. Meanwhile, the dialogue in Salazar’s Revenge is almost as sharp as the guillotine in one standout scene. It’s a pity then that the overall narrative isn’t as engaging as these individual elements. Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge is watchable but quite stale.
