Welcome to the review of Robinson: The Journey, a PlayStation VR Title where you play as a boy named Robin. Your journey starts after the Esmeralda the spaceship you are on, crashes on a planet known as Tyson 3. You must rely on your wits to survive long enough to be rescued, it turns out the planet is not the safest to be stranded on as it’s inhabited by dinosaurs. Luckily you have HIGS your trusty AI companion to assist you on your Journey.

Gameplay

The game starts with Robin finding a nest but it’s not any old nest it belongs to a T-Rex, we witness a baby hatching and Robin, despite the warning from HIGS, decides to name her Laika. Your first objective is to repair a few critical systems around your base, By using your multi-tool, you can levitate various items. One of your other objectives is to scan the creatures on the planet, building a complete database. It’s not all work and no play, the game does have some fun games you can play with either HIGS or Laika.

Your pet T-Rex, known as Laika – awwww.

Graphics

Robinson: The Journey is by far the best looking VR game I have played on the PlayStation 4. From the first time you step out of the pod, you are immersed in a beautiful world. By using the pie chart movement system by default the developers help to prevent motion sickness, you can switch it to smooth but I immediately noticed a drop in performance. You will notice more objects popping into view, coupled with a small drop in frame rate it did cause some discomfort when I played it in this way.

Sound

Thanks to the developers taking full advantage of 3D Audio the audio immersion is impressive and you will certainly feel like you are walking in a forest constantly listening and stopping when you hear something move beyond your view, not knowing if it’s just a mouse or a vicious predator intent on making you its next meal. The music embodies the core of the game falling in with the theme of discovery and hope.

Tyson 3 a beautiful yet deadly planet.

Controls

The game is optimised for the Dual Shock 4 controller, but while it was very enjoyable to play it with the controller, I could not help but think that using the move controllers would improve the experience. One of the drawbacks I found was that your character lacked the ability to run, so should you encounter danger you have to rely on either hiding or your technology to save you. Climbing was especially awkward as you have to use the R2 and L2 buttons to control your hands, you will at times have to shift your body to get at the correct angle to grab climbable ledges and should you let go of both buttons, the result will be a quick fall to your death.

After analyzing a HIGS unit you are able to view images and playback audio logs.

Power can be generated either by air or water. You will be performing a few maintenance tasks to keep everything in tip top shape.

Your pet T-Rex known as Laika awwww.

This quaint little pod has been your home for just over a year.

You can gather data by using your multi-tool to scan creatures or broken HIGS units.

Redistributing power is one of your critical tasks. Without power you cant survive.

One of the first things you do is rebuild this dummy to draw attention to other survivors should they see it.

From the start you are drawn into a strange and wonderful world, be prepared for hours of puzzles and thinking out of the box. The graphics and audio work together to show you what is possible with a VR title, PlayStation 4 Pro owners can expect even more fidelity. The controls are a bit rough around the edges, good news is that there might be Move controller support in the near future. The game can cause some discomfort in the form of VR sickness but I only experienced it when switching the camera from pie-chart to smooth.

I'm 35 obsessed with anything gaming and technology related. Staying in a quiet town does have its drawbacks as we don't have the fastest internet, but that wont stop me from enjoying my passion for gaming. Just a quick shout out to my lovely wife who supports my dreams and my friends and all the crazy moments we have encountered in games.
