Welcome to the review of EVE: Valkyrie, a space-based multiplayer shooter on the PlayStation VR. It’s a great example of how the older genre of space shooters can be revamped when using VR. The game is primarily focused on PVP with game modes including deathmatch and point capture but also features a single player mode for the less adventurous.

Story

You assume the role of a pilot who, moments before death, had his consciousness uploaded to a central mainframe, from here you can be cloned into an augmented body. You can remember every death, but the good news is you will be cloned every time you die. Throughout the game you will unlock more ships and weapons and your ships can also be upgraded. You require silver and salvage parts to upgrade. The game does feature micro transactions but players can also grind trough the game to acquire the needed resources, which is quite refreshing.

Being launched into space is a thrilling experience.

Graphics

The graphics are quite impressive for a VR title, but the maps lack some variety. There is very little that sets them apart and you will find yourself simply thinking “Oh it’s the one with the big space rock in the middle”, or “It’s the one with the blown up ships”. The cockpit is nicely detailed, but while you can see your character move when you lean over and look around, there is one mistakable flaw, when you control the ship your character’s hands remain stationary. I felt this was a bit distracting as it took away from the immersion.

Audio

The games features 3D audio and with the developers’ using some impressive tricks to make you feel like you are really in a dogfight in space, no matter what direction you are turning the audio remained perfect and in sync. You might think this is nothing new, but with the size of the environment and the freedom of movement, it would have been pretty bad if some of the sounds were lost. The one central character of the game you will encounter named Rán Kavik, is voiced by Katee Sackhoff from Battlestar Galactica (Squee!) .

The first dogfight you are in can be very overwhelming, but practice will help you become and Ace pilot.

Gameplay

The game features basic controls so even beginners can get the hang of it pretty quickly. A nice feature is the ability to lock on your missiles using your head movement so all you need to do is look at an enemy and press the missile lock button. Using the Gatling guns, on the other hand, was a bit more of a challenge as it is tied to the ship’s cursor, and you will find yourself going in circles if you want to take down an enemy in this manner, but when you do it’s very rewarding. You also have countermeasures to help you avoid enemy rockets. Playing online with a team will definitely enhance the experience as you can help a friend who is being fired upon by an enemy, good communication will see your team to victory.

By default the flight controls are inverted, this can quickly be switched in the tactical menu.

You start of with a single ship but as you progress you get access to more, as a bonus you can customize colors to make them yours. To the sides you can see your team and the enemy team.

Beside the option to upgrade your ship, you can also install implants to help you acquire more experience.

The missile lock system on the other hand is controlled by your head movement. So you can look at an enemy flying overhead and be able to lock on and fire.

Your primary weapons are tied to the cursor so you have to move to take down the enemy.

Being launched into space is a thrilling experience.

EVE: Valkyrie brought back some memories of past games I enjoyed like Decent, Forsaken and even the X Wing vs Tie Fighter series. Putting the player in a VR environment with the ability to move around freely to help you track enemies put a new level of enjoyment into the game. I can also say that unlike some other titles there was no discomfort in the form of VR Sickness. The game is entirely playable without the mentioned micro transactions so don't be tempted. The single player is very limited so potential buyers should keep in mind its actually focused on PvP multiplayer.

I'm 35 obsessed with anything gaming and technology related. Staying in a quiet town does have its drawbacks as we don't have the fastest internet, but that wont stop me from enjoying my passion for gaming. Just a quick shout out to my lovely wife who supports my dreams and my friends and all the crazy moments we have encountered in games.
