If this movie was a person, it would have gone through an entire University degree with honours, and then have decided to work at a hipster version of McDonalds afterwards because “It’s cool.” This movie made it. For the purpose of being an adventure movie, it met every criterion on the list for being, “it” in this category. And then the director, being caught up in the 2017 Salt Bae hype, got excited and decided to add a little something extra, and by doing so ruined the whole damn thing. Having said that, even as a movie that would have made it, this movie did come with some noticeable flaws. Essentially, it was that the main character had no distinct personality. They cast Tom Cruise – Tom Cruise! – in a heroic role and then gave him no heroic qualities whatsoever. I understand that perhaps that was the objective, but at least some character definition? Nope. He seemed to have been a scavenger sort of bum with no morals, intellect nor charm, who accidentally ended up being the main character of this film. He made no particularly decisive actions throughout the entire movie, and he even managed to ruin the single noble thing he could have done, by admitting that he had given up the last parachute not out of honour but because he thought there was another one. What?! I know that in 2017 we may be trying to do away with overtly masculine hero stereotypes but they have at least given us

What?! I know that in 2017 we may be trying to do away with overtly masculine hero stereotypes but they have at least given us a main character for this particular genre of film who didn’t seem like he would rather have been lying on his couch and eating chips the whole time.

The female lead was undoubtedly beautiful and seemed as if she were trying to portray the intelligent female scientist character, but really, she was more of a damsel in distress. Yes, she was interested in her field, and she argued with the main character and even slyly double-crossed him… But, if she were a stronger character, even with the male lead being so bland, the draw of this movie could have been picked up by a significant degree. Finally, I am going to address the saddest bit of this movie. Jake Johnson, AKA Nick from New Girl, in the role of the hero’s accomplice. My goodness, what a mess. This character was a one that saw a good movie come to its own ruin. My opinion is that in an adventure movie, especially a classic like The Mummy, the comedy should be sharp and witty, like the intrepid adventurers themselves. Okay, the accomplice is granted grace in this respect, in that their character often provides the comic relief. But this kind of comic relief did not match the tone of the movie at all. It was as if they had taken Nick from New Girl and planted the exact same character in a different narrative. To make matters worse, he later turned into

It was as if they had taken Nick from New Girl and planted the exact same character in a different narrative. To make matters worse, he later turned into an idiotic, comedic zombie? My soul cringes. This is where they went wrong. This is the negative “it” that counterbalanced the film being a positive overall “it” film. You’ll have to see this horror for yourself.

However, there was one particular character for whom I believe this movie is worth seeing. The Mummy herself had such a gorgeous sense about her – she was strong in her beauty, in her body, in her movement and in her character. The story woven around her was beautifully crafted, her scenes in the modern-day part of the narrative were attention-grabbing and in view of good vs. evil, the good in this story would have never come to rise (and it didn’t really, it just responded) if it were not for her glorious and sexy evil. Everyone loves a great villain and this one has the fantastical allure of a dementor combined with the dangerous sex appeal of a femme fatal. Throughout the entire movie, you kind of really just wanted her to win.

Having covered the strongest features of the film, I will also add that the action sequences of The Mummy were particularly enjoyable. Tight enough to catch your full attention yet brief enough for you not to get lost, I think this is one of the fundamental parts of an adventure flick that this movie got right. There’s no real romance because the lead male and female characters are really just as weak and boring as each other, but you can survive that (like they just survived the movie.) The romance is brought in from other aspects of the movie, so it’s not to say that the film is completely devoid of sexual chemistry or emotional connection; it is not. The plot was easy enough to digest, and the overall sense of the narrative from the mummy’s perspective was charming and weighty enough for you to be entertained by it in a completely believable sense.

I’d have given this movie a clear thumbs down were it not for the way in which the story tied together in the end. Not that Tom Cruise suddenly developed a personality, rather, a soulfulness may have been projected onto someone who doesn’t actually have any soulfulness at all, but who’s to say his character couldn’t develop? The premise of the movie is undoubtedly an interesting one, and if there were to be a follow-up film to this one, I would definitely want to watch it too.

Gypsy Rose is convinced that she's actually a fictional character who has somehow accidentally ended up in the real world. As a result of this, she finds herself being frequently delusional, living la vie en rose.

Her only saving grace would be the escape into the wonderful world of animation, musicals and cinema.
