Geek Fest is only two weeks away! Can you taste the excitement in the air?

I sat down with Meryl Rosenberg, who puts the whole festival together to talk about what to expect at this year’s fest and our mutual excitement for the season 6 premiere of Game of Thrones.

GN: How did you get involved with Geek Fest?

MR: It’s a bit of a long story actually. Kasia, who owns Dark Carnival with Richard, is an old horse riding buddy of mine. When a mutual friend and I started the Medieval Fair, we invited them to come chill with us and have a stall. Sometime between the epic chaos that was the first fair, Kasia comes waving a bottle of vodka saying we have to do something like this for geeks. And that’s how it started. We are now going into our 4th year and it’s just getting bigger and bigger.

GN:What you most excited about to see at this year’s Fest?

MR: Oh wow. How can you even ask me that? There’s so much. In terms of attractions, my favourite is always the medieval guys. It’s where my heart lies.

But I am also excited for the cosplays. The effort and time that people put into their cosplays and the talent is just unbelievable. We also have Robo Wars which is super cool.

I am also excited about some of the new stuff like Black Ops Laser Tag. The guys are going to have belt strapped to them that gives them a shock when you get shot. But there is so much more!

GN: What are some of your favourite geeky fandoms?

MR: I’m definitely less a superhero girl and more a genre fan. I tend to read quite a lot. I’m really into my sci-fi and fantasy. That’s where my heart is at. I also love straight up dark fantasies.

I like my heroes and anti-heroes really dark. One my favourite authors Tanith Lee died recently and broke my heart. She really knew how to write vampires.

George RR Martin’s book Fever Dream is also one to read if you want vampires.

GN: Are you excited for the season premier of Game of Thrones?

MR: Yes! I am going to be staying up late with popcorn and hot chocolate. I’ve read all the books over and over. I really can’t wait. Even though there has ben a lot of criticism about the tv series not following the books, you need to look at it as its own entity. If you want the storyline to be exact – go read the book.

GN:How do you feel about what they did to the Dorne storyline in season 5?

MR: I must be honest I watched those particular episodes with one eye open. It was that irritating. But at the same time, I know it wouldn’t have worked out that well in a tv series format.

GN: How do you stay on top off the geeky series and movies coming out?

MR: Dark Carnival has this really cool calendar on their site which has everything. I use that all the time.

It would be even more fabulous to eventually get push through notifications to your phone when an episode is about to come on. That would be the coolest thing ever!

Thanks for taking the time to speak with us Meryl! I didn’t think it was possible, but I am now even more excited for Geek Fest and Game of Thrones!
