Batman Arkham VR Demo:

I’ve never really used a VR headset before, but I found the PSVR comfortable and their new headphones better than comfortable. It was fortunately cool enough in the room for my visor not to overheat or my hands sweat on either of the PlayStation wands, of which I always disliked over the Nintendo Wii remotes.

Then, the attendant put the game on, amped up the sound and I was blasted, more dropped! Down into the world of Batman Arkham VR.

At first, I felt like I was in an odd version of Trespasser, then, I began to move my hands/wands, and found the engagement with my virtual hands amazingly accurate. I picked up a frame and looked around Wayne Manor. It was nuts! Then, I was greeted by Alfred, so real his face, like any other UHD gaming experience, except, I could reach out to him and move my head to look at him, eye to eye!

Then, I picked up a key, unlocked the piano, and was lowered into the dark Batcave.

Nothing could prepare you for that decent, your stomach will do drops, your legs will become like rocks with tension being lowered down a cliff face. It was surreal.

The remaining experience was a lot of fun, picking up and throwing a few batarangs and a grappling hook. Unlike anything I had thought VR to have come to. I was Batman!

Then, as we came to the end of the most dramatic introduction of my life, I realised, I was bound, not by my virtual experience, but by my body. I obviously couldn’t walk around or move around other than what I was doing. Yes, it was a demo, I assume the full gaming experience will utilise the other buttons on the PS Wand, but it would be a real shame for the entire game to be on rails and miss out on that fully immersive experience.

Virtual Reality at rAge Expo 2016:

This year’s rAge Expo was one of the best yet, I felt the Expo finally got back what we’ve all seen in rAge: advanced technology, new games, live demos and … FREE STUFF! With a few interesting odds and ends added in for some entertainment like the amazing humans at the blossoming cosplay segment, the board game floor and the always fun screaming contest between PlayStation and Xbox fans.

I guess we’re all growing up.

I heard about the new Batman VR game on PlayStation VR (Morpheus still sounds better), and was excited to try it out. Not for any other reason other than to write an article for Geek Node and relinquish my experience around what I felt was a sub-standard weak attempt at virtual reality.

I don’t move on technology that I feel should be better, I don’t enjoy the working or playing on technology that is not efficient or too new to be effective. Originally, it was touch screens on smartphones (long story), now it’s virtual reality.

Partly because I want full emersion, but more because I grew up on Johnny Quest and wanted my own Quest World.

The Bat-Rub:

Yes, for my first real VR gaming experience, I was more than overwhelmed and pleased with everything Batman Arkham VR had to offer, considering it was a demo. I was ready to sell my car and house to fund my ongoing experience into the world of DC.

Though, I still think that we’re another generation of engaging mixed reality media before we reach full immersion, and I cannot wait! Will I shift my lifestyle to PlayStation and it’s VR headset in the future? The truth is, it’s not that I don’t want to, it’s more a matter of investment, how many dollars and cents I’ll have to invest not only in PSVR but VR as a medium and will it drop me half way like 3D movies did the film industry.

Consider this my comment: If I had the money, I would have already equipped my life with the geek-gagging PSVR or any of its counterparts. PlayStation hasn’t released an official price yet, but it smacks of a Hefty investment considering the technology.

I hope PSVR and VR overall come down in price over the next few years, you’ll see me in line with the best of them.

Thank you PlayStation for the experience, it was more than amazing!
