You’re probably asking yourself the same questions I did. “There’s a sequel to Now You See Me 2? Did we really need another one? What for? How did the last one end?” That last question is so important because, quite frankly, the first one wasn’t really that memorable. It had some nice ideas and was fun but, does this franchise really have such a big following and did it make such an impression to warrant a sequel? I can see that they’re trying to do a magic themed Ocean’s Eleven thing here, especially with the big ensemble of talent at its disposal. But I found the shining light at the end of the tunnel. The one and only reason to watch this film: Daniel Radcliffe. Yes, in a movie about magic and illusion, we have Harry Potter. Coupled with a new director in Jon M. Chu, the film immediately shows some glimpses of hope.

The Breakdown

I’ll be honest, I had seen the first film once only, way back when it was released in 2013, so I was out of touch with the film’s initial concept, so I strongly suggest watching it before you attempt to see the sequel. Basically the team of magicians, known as the Four Horsemen, generally do big-scale magic tricks and illusions that are more than just showbiz pieces. Their endeavours usually have strong social awareness consequences and expose a bunch of baddies in the world, mostly in the corporate sector. The Four Horsemen return after their disappearing act in their last big heist in the previous film (without Isla Fisher who hasn’t returned for the sequel, which makes three Horsemen now, if you don’t count Mark Ruffalo, who is still playing a mole cop and the leader of the Horsemen).

The Four Horsemen recruit a new magician for their crew in Lula (Lizzy Caplan) and the team, together with their leader, plan to stop a tech magnate from launching his new app, which steals people’s information. Their plot to hijack the launch of the app is foiled when their entire act on stage is hacked by a secret individual, who exposes them and, in turn, kidnaps the team. The secret kidnapper is Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe), who wants to pull off an almost impossible heist and is convinced that the only people who can, are The Four Horsemen.

Director Jon M. Chu, who is more famous for his Step Up franchise films and Justin Bieber documentaries, breathes some fresh air into another sequel, like the way he did with G.I. Joe: Retaliation. I would never have thought this film would have been necessary, but he manages to make a fun and entertaining movie, that strangely leaves you wanting more.

Throughout the film, in all of the Four Horsemen’s escapades, you’re rooting for them, hoping they don’t get caught with their impossible heist, itching and on edge when things are too close for comfort. The stunts, skills and reveals are quite exciting to watch, especially if you’re a fan of magic. We know the actors aren’t doing actual magic, but you’re sometimes left with the feeling that you’re actually watching magicians, which I didn’t feel in the first film. This is what makes the sequel a step up from the first one.

This ensemble cast is absolutely brilliant and always fun to watch, even if you may never unsee Jesse Eisenberg ruining Lex Luthor for you. The casting of Daniel Radcliffe in a film about magic and illusion is pure genius. His character is as if Harry Potter grew up, got over all the magic, paid other people to do it for him and became a total dick. The addition of Lizzy Caplan (from Mean Girls, Masters of Sex and The Interview fame) creates a fresh, comedic take on things. Her presence adds necessary humour and wit to every scene she’s in, which makes the entire film a whole lot more enjoyable.

Surprisingly, this film exceeded a lot of my expectations. It isn’t one of the best heist films of all time and isn’t going to be remembered for years to come or anything, but it’s done a great job at showing its value and necessity. Plus, hold on to your butts, because according to CinemaBlend.com and Empire Online, Now You See Me is going the trilogy route, with a third film already in pre-production.

Sideshow Attractions (Special Features)

No special features I’m afraid, even though I was strangely duped into believing that there were some according to the back of the disc. Not cool yo, not cool.

It seems unnecessary at first, but Now You See Me 2 surprisingly offers up a little bit of freshness thanks to the new cast members, who make it just that little bit more enjoyable.
