It’s been a while since Tim Burton has done something that has his signature style on it. The last time we saw him direct was in 2014′ s critically acclaimed drama “Big Eyes”, which didn’t totally evoke the eccentric substance and style we have come to love of Tim Burton. The basis of Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children comes from a dark fantasy novel by Ransom Riggs, which was described as “…creepy…” in a review by The Guardian. Making creepy films is definitely something that Mr. Burton has always been brilliant at, so this seemed like a perfect fit. Read up more on the film with our very own phatmammasboy, who reviewed the film here on release in cinemas last year.

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children is one of those films where you want to dig deep and find out how it all came together, through the directors, writers and producers, especially if you’re like me and enjoy getting more than just the film when you pay for a DVD or Blu-Ray. From the exceptional production design to the makeup, wardrobe and visual effects on a Tim Burton production, I looked forward to seeing what went on behind the scenes in the making of his films. Thankfully, I wasn’t too disappointed, as this DVD serves up a small portion of extra features for you to nibble on, or as I like to call them in the Khanival, “sideshow attractions”.

- The Peculiar Story – This insert is a very in-depth look into the creation of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, mostly from the author’s side view. He explains the idea of how he was inspired to write the novel and the moment it transpired into the making of a Tim Burton film. Various members of the crew, from the producers to costume designers, makeup artists and actors, explain how they were able to translate visuals so easily from the book into their respective roles on the film.

- Map of Days – This is broken into two chapters and is a really juicy feature on the DVD. Both take you deep inside the intricacies and technicalities of the making of the film at some of the beautiful locations. It’s amazing how so much of the film depended on actual locations to drive it and give it character, which you see here, as opposed to today’s cheap CGI locations and backdrops which are used. There’s also some wonderful on-set vs film, side by side comparisons of certain scenes included here.

- “Wish That You Were Here” – Florence + The Machine composed a song especially for the film and the music video is included on the disc.

- Gallery – The gallery is an amazing collection that includes original photographs that the author had found, which inspired the story and characters in the film. They are also placed side by side with photos of the characters in the actual film, which were replicated to look like the author’s originals.

- Also included are original early concept art sketches from Tim Burton, which are always a wonder to look at, especially if you’re a Burton fan. You really see what an amazing artist he is, as he’s able to tell a story through simple stick-like sketches and translate it on to screen, plus you see little bits from the sketches in the film too.

This DVD is definitely worth buying if you enjoyed the film and, if you’re a huge Tim Burton fan, you get to see this master film-maker behind the scenes bring this great novel to life. The added features really make the overall DVD experience worth it, even if you weren’t too fond of the film.
