Fallout 4 was a resounding success last year, walking away with a ton of GOTY awards and received the extended admiration of a lot of gamers. Deservedly so too, since Bethesda really nailed it, even if there were some noticeable flaws with the game. Many people lost hours of their lives to the mammoth game, including myself. Bethesda have a history of also delivering excellent DLC for their game, bringing massive new maps and long stories to the table. Fallout 3 and New Vegas had some stellar DLC packs with some of them featuring over 15 hours of new content and some even having some of the strongest stories of the franchise.

Bethesda have now revealed their first round of DLC packs and well, it leaves me a little conflicted inside. The first two, Automatron and Wasteland Workshop both seem like minor improvements to the game that only really add a small amount of new content that can even be recreated using some mods out there. Far Harbor sounds more like a traditional Fallout DLC pack bringing a new location and a new story to the mix, but it’s also really expensive retailing at $25. People that bought the Season Pass will of course receive these as part of their purchase, but if I was someone who bought the Season Pass, I wouldn’t be too happy right now.

Bizarrely, the DLC will also be allowed to be beta tested by selected PC players. This is certainly a first and a pretty strange move, but it makes sense. Contrary to how betas normally work, you can keep the DLC after the testing period entirely for free. You can sign up to be a part of the beta here , if you want to try your luck.

Perhaps the big DLC will be more than worth it and the smaller ones might add something meaningful to the game, we’ll just have to see, but this is very uncharacteristic of Bethesda and how they dealt with DLC before.
