Chinese Room’s first game Dear Esther made some waves within the gaming landscape. The game could barely be described as a “game” as all you did was walk around, look at stuff and listen to a narration. This opened up some debates over whether or not you can even consider games like this a “game” or if it’s something else like an interactive experience or something of that sort. However, people were open to such a new way of experiencing a story even if it goes against some pretty set gaming philosophies. Chinese Room was an innovator in this field besides all the flak they got.

Their last game Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture was also a “walking simulator” and it is easy to assume that this is the only type of game that they make, but you would be wrong in that assessment. They recently announced Total Dark, an isometric RPG with “tons of mechanics” and a “free-floating camera”.

Dan Pinchbeck, the studio’s director has a particular fondness for pen-and-paper RPGs and this serves as an inspiration for the game. He had the following to say:

It’s a much more traditional game, an isometric adventure with a free-floating camera and lots of mechanics. It will make some people happy while other people are going to wonder if we have the right experience to make that sort of game. But we absolutely do. Most people know us because of Dear Esther and now Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, it’s easy to assume that’s the kind of game we will always make and have always made. What they may not realize is that we were developing mods alongside Dear Esther.

I’m excited to see what comes from the developer as they try to prove that they aren’t a one trick pony.
