Epic Games, the developers of some of the most beloved game franchises of all time such as Gears of War and Unreal Tournament, are now stating that they don’t think singleplayer modes within games is a viable strategy anymore. This came from an interview that they did over at Polygon , where Tim Sweeney, the CEO told them about their new development strategy. Here are his words:

The economics of those games forces developers to work with major publishers to succeed, and that seems to be irreversible. We realized that the business really needed to change its approach quite significantly. We were seeing some of the best games in the industry being built and operated as live games over time rather than big retail releases … so we began the transition of being a fairly narrow console developer focused on Xbox to being a multi-platform game developer and self publisher, and indie on a larger scale.

In essence, he’s saying that the future lies in free-to-play multiplayer games, such as their newest release Paragon, because it can be live and improved over time. Quite the ballsy statement if I say so myself. Multiplayer-only titles have been sweeping the industry as of late, but there’s always a place for singleplayer modes. I’d even argue that some games suffered heavily because they had no singleplayer campaign such as Titanfall and the tragically received, Evolve.

So it seems that the developer is going into the free-to-play arena fighting model and while it can be good for them at a business standpoint, I remain sad that we won’t see any narratives from them in the future. Gears of War, while not having the best narrative out there, was still a very enjoyable game with a ton of memorable characters. To see that go away is sad.
