Modern cinema will regard the Fast And The Furious franchise as a relatively successful one. The wild and often heartless portrayal of petrol heads and their penchant for adrenaline, not even the loss of one its main characters has dared to slow down this vehicle.

Now, if you’re not a car enthusiast or a follower of this franchise – like myself you could end up having to battle staying awake for this film. Is it entirely forgettable? No. Is it silly formula with big explosions? Yes. There’s no middle ground for this film, you’re either in or out.

After filling-up for the eighth time round, Dominic Toretto and crew find themselves divided, as Toretto ventures over to the dark side where Cipher (Charlize Theron) a mysterious cyber-villain who in essence hacks the brain of Toretto and uses it against him to turn his back on the only code he lives for, family.

There’s plenty going on this latest instalment, enemies are now friends. Dom and Lettie are married, and Brian and Mia are retired. The “go big or go home” mantra these films have been enamoured in is ever-present and maybe I was fooled into seeing Toretto going head to head with a nuclear-armed submarine. I wasn’t.

As expected, this film has a plenty of eccentricities, which mind-numbingly allows the plot to reach cruise control rather steadily thanks to the use of insane stunt sequences and some well-timed comedic relief. The outright mayhem caused Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel and Jason Statham is a sure highlight – but far too often director F Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton, Friday) stumble’s when delivering any substance to the already one-dimensional story.

Fans may enjoy this. All brawn and not enough brains.

This is not a bad franchise. This is a bad movie, mainly because of its over reliance on action sequences and poor dialogue. It has little to no substance.
