Nanananana BATMAN…FLUUUXX. Ok so now that I have that out of my system let me introduce to you, for the first time on Geek Node, the concept of Fluxx. I’m an old hand at Fluxx as I’ve been playing it, with my fiance Mindless Pixie, off and on since we started dating. Our first foray into the world of Fluxx was with StarFluxx which as the name suggests deals with star, or rather sci-fi themed subject matter. A number of properties…or allusions to said properties included Doctor Who, Star Trek and many more. They never mentioned the franchises by name which indicated to me that they did not have the rights to use the properties themselves, but it certainly did the trick in terms of the “Ahhh I recognize that” moments we had.

The basic concept behind Fluxx is that it’s a card game which changes constantly. Be that via the rules, or the ability to steal the other player’s cards or even by transferring seats (while leaving behind your hand and played cards). There really is any way the game can go, and it isn’t set in stone that you will win (unless you are really really good at it, which we will cover later in this review).

How Fluxx works is simple, you start the game dealing a hand consisting of 3 cards, then you pretty much play the game and learn how to play. The rules are right on the cards and the instructions for each potential mood works in the same way. You get rule cards, action cards, keeper cards (which can help you attain your goal, as well as do other things), creeper cards which generally causes you and sometimes the other players to not be able to win (or do win in some cases) and of course goal cards which requires several different win conditions such as a specific player to have specific keepers played in front of them in order to win.

Right, so now that we have the basic premise of Fluxx out of the way, let’s talk about Batman Fluxx . Batman Fluxx is a themed version of the Fluxx series of card games which casts the keepers as the heroes of Gotham and the creepers as the villains or Rogues Gallery of Gotham. Some of the actions in the game allude to places in the fictional DC world and allows you to win if you have all the of the villains in the Rogues Gallery (if you have the right goal) or even to place all discarded villains underneath a card aptly named “Arkham Asylum”. Another card will allow you to “free” all the villains from Arkham Asylum and then distribute them amongst all the players.

Batman Fluxx or any Fluxx game for that matter is quite the novelty for party games but despite its fluctuating nature, it does tend to become a bit stale if played too many times. Fluxx as a series is a fantastic ice breaker at any given social gathering and you may find that if you’re in a social group that enjoys the occasional board game evening that bringing the same Fluxx game along every time will just cause said players to ignore it and rather play something else after a while. It’s actually a nice idea to buy a few of these (but don’t buy the same ones as your friends) so as to keep the idea of Fluxx fresh and fun. It is sometimes fun to revisit some of the older ones you’ve bought.

This particular iteration of Fluxx uses beautifully drawn renditions from the Batman – The Animated Series property and even if you’re not playing it, it makes a nice addition for artistic purposes. The mechanics feel fresh but some of them just come across as rehashed from previous entries into the Fluxx series so it may be fun for a few rounds before you move on to another game.

All in all Batman Fluxx is a fun, yet easily forgettable entry into the Fluxx series, but still worth a shot at the low price tag.

Batman Fluxx is an affordable way to enter into the world of table top gaming and features some interesting and fun alternatives to previous Fluxx games. Well worth the R350, but in the same breath can get old and boring in social settings very quickly.
