Digging into the story behind the upcoming film, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, I managed to step into a rather “peculiar” tale of the story’s origins.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is an upcoming film with a star-studded cast of Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Greene (Penny Dreadful) and Asa Butterfield (the kid from Hugo). While the star-studded cast may allude to an archetypal Hollywood blockbuster, the book the film is based on has a more sincere origin; beginning with one man’s peculiar hobby and genuine passion to create a unique and authentic piece of literature.

Ransom Riggs is a collector of vernacular photographs… long-lost photographs taken by everyday people doing everyday things; a vacation, birthday party, family lunch, picnic etc. I had no idea this was a thing, but it is an apparently common hobby amongst flea market frequents and junk crawlers. Sitting with a massive collection of these photographs reaching deep into the histories of the lives captured within them, Ransom Riggs had a remarkable idea.

Riggs wanted to tell a story using his collection of photographs. His vision was to create an intricately woven tale using only archaic pictures of real people doing regular things. After consultations with an editor, he decided to tone down his overly ambitious project and rather allow the pictures to be a guide to an actual narrative.

The book he wrote was Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, a somewhat haunting and dark tale about a young boy investigating his grandfather’s fantastic stories regarding an orphanage for children with peculiar abilities. The boy’s curiosity leads him on an adventure, uncovering the truth of his grandfather’s stories as well as his own peculiarities.

The book was revered by critics who praised the originality and unique use of the old photographs; albeit extremely creepy, they seemed to add a level of poignant charm and depth to the story. Hitting No.1 on the New York Time Best Sellers list and hanging on the list for another 70 weeks, a movie adaptation was somewhat inevitable. Picked up by the prince of peculiarity, Tim Burton, the film hopefully stays true to the heart and passion teemed into the book.

I am personally excited and look forward to watching this obscure tale on the big screen. There is however a level of scepticism stirred within this excitement, a hint of wariness regarding the capability of Tim Burton. This incredulity understandably stems from his latest watered down and commercialised adaptations; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice. Fingers are however crossed that Burton will restore my faith and journey us back to his glory days of inspired and heartfelt gothic cinema.

Editor’s Note: A second (Hollow City) and Third (Library of Souls) book, has since been released as well and looks to be as interesting as the original. Here’s hoping the movie is a box office success warranting the second and third books to be made into film as well.

Miss Peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children opens nation wide on 7 October, 2016. Check out the trailer below.
