First off… my knowledge of Wonder Woman was somewhat limited prior to entering the theatre. I understood the basic composition of the superhero, her dynamic within the Justice League as well as the relationship dynamics between herself and the rest of the team. Her character never seemed something striking or appealing both in personality or super powers to delve deep into. I most likely did not have the excitement and eagerness to watch the film as most people reading this review might have.

The movie tells her story in the generic format of any other origin story. A group of Amazonian women living in an island separate from the rest of the world get exposed to World War I by a spy running away from Germans. Diana, the Amazonian princess takes off to assist the spy, Steve Trevor played by Chris Pine to end the war.

While formulaic in the story telling, filming and dialogue, Wonder Women kept slipping and sliding on either edge of getting the formula correct from enjoyable to boring.

There are parts in the movie where the visuals look jaw dropping stunning and others that look rushed and plain ridiculous. The environments looked forced and synthetic. I never got the feeling that I was in the heavily historic environments the film shifts through. While all of it is beautifully done. It felt like the level of separation between imagery, realism and atmosphere was like being thrown into a theme park version of the actual setting. Some action scenes look ridiculous as well. They look rushed with odd looking dimensions, poor textures and a high level of on-screen busyness.

While Chris Prine tries his best to be a likable character, it sometimes comes across as forced. His personality is somewhat disjointed even though it is evident he is a talented actor given a somewhat poor and inconsistent role to play. Gal Gadot as Diana is absolutely stunning and most of the film is fixated on her face, clothes and power stances. And while all of that is fine… her acting is where her character really fell short. There were a few moments I found cringe worthy. Especially the emotional parts where she is attempting to drive the audiences’ emotions in a certain event, or when she is saying something meant to be profound. It all falls flat. Her presence on screen as a warrior is not believable. There are parts she looks like a cosplay version of the character instead of the character itself and for me… that’s pretty bad.

Nothing much can be said about the story. Momentary hopes of the film ending passed by throughout the film. The story while entailing some plot twists was very far from remarkable and had a very odd resemblance to Captain America – The First Avenger, both in setting and premise. A film, which in itself was barely remarkable.

Overall, Wonder Woman was an unenjoyable expose of a lot of glitter but little gold. A dulling element to the last shimmering hopes for the rest of the upcoming DC series.

After years of delusions believing he will grow up to be Steven Spielberg, months of therapy finally helped him overcome his disorder. He now believes he will grow up to be both the Coen Brothers. Ziyaad has taken his love for movies to an abnormal level, leaving his glamorous job as an engineer to make movies, write about movies, talk about movies and on occasion do expressive dance showing his love for movies. He knows his movies like he knows the time of his bowel movements (surprisingly very well)…
