AMC , the network responsible for cult hitmakers such as Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and Mad Men has announced another show that’s sure to raise some eyebrows due for release, mid-2016. Preacher, a 75-issue comic created by DC’s offspring Vertigo is set to be one of the boldest tv shows to deal with religion in a long time . The comic deals with Jessie Custer, a small town preacher who accidentally flattened his church and his congregants when possessed by a supernatural being known as Genesis. Genesis is the product of an unnatural uncoupling between an angel and demon. The being itself has no individual will, it is the product of pure goodness and evil. Once bonded with Jessie they become extremely powerful, even more so than god himself. I decided to find out more about the series, hoping to gain a sense of excitement. If conservative activist groups like One Million Moms had problems with shows like Lucifer or Angel from Hell they might cancel all PTA meetings once they catch wind of how unapologetically controversial this show will be. Below are moments from the comics we shouldn’t expect to be on the show, you know, for fear of societal outrage and such.

WARNING: The show explores the prejudice in Christian history and creates extreme personified parodies for shock value. I advise that those easily offended with regards to religion should not scroll down.

- A Catholic Priest with Contrasting Eating Disorders

Allfather D’Aronique is the leader of the religious group known as The Grail, who’re in charge of preserving the bloodline of Christ. A parody of Roman Catholic priests, Allfather D’Aronique, is immensely huge and unafraid to show his gluttonous habits. In fact, he spends 60 million dollars a year repairing broken airplane wheels due to landings from D’Aronique’s extreme weight. With eating disorders being such a sensitive topic, it’s hard to imagine scenes of a morbidly obese man stuffing himself. It makes it even harder to imagine a morbidly obese man shoving an ivory stick in the shape of two fingers down his throat after stuffing himself. Not only is D’Aronique gluttonous, but he’s problematically bulimic too. Powerfully ruthless, his subjects, knowing that they could be publicly offed if they ever mention his bizarre eating habits, have no choice but to helplessly watch as the (surprisingly) pious man partakes in this disturbing ritual. D’Aronique carries a fairly important role in the show so he will be expected to appear, minus the ivory stick.

Jessie isn’t a mysterious protagonist who goes on a Western inspired trek across the country. We also get a strong backstory behind the tortured character and his tortured past. T.C is Grandmother Custer’s “law enforcer”, unafraid to kill anyone, whether by orders, or pure annoyance. Everyone in this show is vile in some way, even sweet grandmothers who own coffins found at the bottom of the swamp used for torture. Anime lovers watch out cause this pervert takes sexual deviant to a whole new level. What hobby could the writers give a skilled, cold blooded killer you ask? Coitus with any creature or inanimate object it seems. Readers are only given one glimpse of the twisted killers proclivities thankfully. Unfortunately, it doesn’t end well for one witness. A minor character by the name of Billy Bob catches T.C. forcing himself on an unfortunate chicken and is subsequently murdered by the troubled “law-enforcer”. Bestiality is a topic that no studio would want to face the repercussions of and while T.C is a character the show needs for the protagonists character progression, I’m sure T.C’s sexual habits with animals will be kept off screen and alluded to instead.

- The Messiah is no Saviour

The reason why The Grail has to preserve the holy bloodline is because in this story, Jesus didn’t die on the cross. He was in fact saved, sired a family (with the worlds favourite prostitute) and was killed by an offal cart. With a show like this, preservation is taken in its most extreme sesnse. I’m talking about that James and Cersei Lannister level of “preservation”, if you catch my drift. Unfortunate to The Grail’s mission, the ancestors of the original Messiah didn’t produce beautiful Aryan-esque offspring but a mentally disturbed, inbred, scion that no religious group would put their hopes of mankind on. Throwing his faeces at guests when caged in with his sister, Messiah is sometimes allowed to run wild under D’Aronique’s watch. While the previous moments may be incorporated into the show under varying degrees. I don’t see any reference or casting for this character during production.

TV Shows haven’t been afraid to question Judeo-Christian morality. Joan of Arc portrayed God as a being who often appeared in the most unsuspecting of individuals. Supernatural is known for depicting God as a disconnected, unconcerned creator. Preacher did the same too, difference is, they cast him as Custers antagonist, aka The Bad Guy. The comics personifies him as a character who, contrary to popular belief, is just as flawed as we are. He is narcissistic, prideful and cruelly punishes those who defy him. Inspired to create humans out of loneliness and a longing to be loved (already problematic) God then proceeded to watch from the Heavens where he was king. He leaves Heaven for fear of the power of Genesis . It’ll be interesting to see how the producers adapt God in their story. Writing him off would be changing the entire mythos behind the comic and what made it so popular.

Stating that this show will cause an uproar is definite. Question is, will Preachers narrative be enough to carry the show for at least five seasons without it being unceremoniously pulled? Let’s hope it’ll have those moms squirming in their seat for years to come.
