The first weekend of April saw Durban host the second Icon by the Sea . Once again the Icon brand proved why it is South Africa’s longest running Geek Culture convention, and Durban didn’t disappoint. With more exhibitors than last year, as well as additional gaming tournaments Icon by the Sea was a great success and I for one look forward to seeing it grow even more next year. Despite the humidity being at a high during the week Durban’s geeks turned out in numbers to support the event and spend a weekend playing games, cosplaying and geeking out.

With over 100 demo games on offer the board game hall was busy all weekend. Board gamers were also had the chance to pick up a limited edition card from The Colony 2174, a deck building and dice rolling game produced by local games studio Gobbo Games. The designer was also on hand to demo the game with interested gamers, which proved very popular. IconBtS also played host to four board gaming tournaments over the weekend: Settlers of Catan; Memoir ’44; Ticket to Ride and Star Realms all of which saw fierce play by all involved

First the year Durban hosted officially supported Pathfinder Society convention games. With 17 games over the 3 days, run by 6 Games Masters. Pathfinder Society Durban registered over 30 new Pathfinders, all of whom brought back a wealth of knowledge and reports to the Pathfinder Society. Prize supported came in the form of Pazio gift certificates and Icon edition Chronicle Sheets. It also saw the release of the Pazio Welcome to Pathfinder Society Chronicle Sheets for new players.

The Durban Sword and Shield Club gave the public a chance to experience real sword and board combat with their Battle Heritage SA Fight a Knight event on the Saturday. More than just a chance to hack at someone in full armor the FAK initiative also raises funds to assist our fighters with their goal to represent South Africa on an international level in the world championships of the sport of Full Contact Medieval Combat.

Might armies clashed at the Durban Wargames Club Warhammer 40K tournament. The two day contest eventually saw the Tau reign supreme and take first place. The Bat Cave also hosted a speed painting event on the Friday evening, with painters displaying their finished models over the weekend. Given two random paints and 3 random models each hobbyist had two hours to paint their models and incorporate their random paints.

Card gaming was also represented by Magic the Gathering, and Pokemon. The latest Magic the Gathering expansion Shadows over Innistrad had 3 prerelease events, including a Midnight release on the Friday night. Friday Night Magic and Casual Commander games took place across the weekend. Junior; Senior and Masters Level Pokemon players competed at the KZN Regional Championships. Booster draft events for the BREAKpoint expansion were also held. Pokemon players also had the chance to play in Durban’s first Pokemon video game tournament.

Rogue Moon Studios stand was open all weekend, giving visitors a chance to play and chat with the developer of System Crash; another Durban produced product. (You should totally go support it on Steam Greenlight by the way)

Cosplayers come out in force with the top 3 positions being a challenge for the judges. The eventual winner was an amazing Sylvanas Windrunner

In all Durban proved once again that it has more than enough geek power to host fantastic conventions and with any luck it will continue to grow over the years much like its older sibling in Gauteng.
