I’ve never been a massive fan of fighting games however that didn’t stop me from playing Injustice: Gods Among Us. It’s mechanics were never the greatest (compared to others of its ilk) but it had something they didn’t…the Joker, oh and the other DC Heroes (*cough* Villians) I guess.

NetherRealms saw this issue and from what I’ve seen, has fixed it.

The Good

I got the pleasure to see a gameplay demo of Injustice 2 behind closed doors, the first thing to strike me was how it looked. The game is gorgeous, no surprise there since they are using the Mortal Kombat X engine which they’re flexing to a much greater extent. This was evident by the beautiful puffy clouds we got to see as Superman flying punched his opponent across the planet (ala something you would see in DBZ) before they both came crashing down into Gotham City once more.

The engine is not the only thing I see reminiscent of MKX, the combat as well GREATLY reminded me of the former which is a pretty good thing if you ask me. After all, there are very few other fighters that could even compare with MK’s level of gameplay polish. The combos are tight, quick and fluid, add in a bit of environmental combat and the ability to send opponents to different stages of the map, make this one to definitely keep an eye on.

Or should I say it would be if there wasn’t one glaring flaw that threatens to put a damper on the game.

The Bad

An item system. You heard me right folks, after every (or so) round you play of Injustice 2, a random item for the character you are playing drops. These items range from common to *insert highest item tier here* and each item changes the look of the character they are equipped on. “That sounds great!” I hear you saying and it probably would be, if that’s ALL the items did. But it’s not.

Depending on the rarity of the items, you may get an additional combo that wasn’t available before or a straight stat/damage increase on certain moves or attack types. This is where the problem is. The items can also be upgraded by using them and the characters they’re equipped to, increasing the stat bonuses and the physical appearance of the items themselves.

Fighting games were always a genre where skill was rewarded more than anything else, I fear this system will remove that element from Injustice 2 which would be an absolute shame seeing as how enticing the rest of the game is.

The Ugly

Possibly the most important and worrying development is how these items will be acquired other than by the random drops. We’ve seen NetherRealms use the “Koins” system in MKX so the likelihood of micro-transactions in this full release are not outside the *Nether*realm of possibility. If this does happen, it means that anyone could make up for their lack of skill by simply buying the best items for a character and getting straight damage boosts to their attacks (as well as exclusive combos). It remains to be seen if this will only provide the “Base”, un-upgraded version of an item , if it does come to fruition, that is.

I need to reiterate that I did NOT see any indication of a micro-transaction system in the demo I witnessed, this is just me hypothesizing that there MAY be one based on NetherRealms previous releases and the fact that the system seems incredibly open to exploitation.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, there you have my opinion of Injustice 2 from what I’ve seen so far. Until it releases early next year, we’re just going to have to hope that I was wrong. I know I do.
