With arguably the biggest multi platform shooter release of the year just a few weeks away, we thought it best to refresh everybody’s minds with what went down In the single player campaigns of Black Ops1 and Black Ops2.

Travelers beware: some spoilers ahead

The Black Ops series has a constant theme in them that related to ‘programming’ people (and machines) to act out on a series of instructions on activation and tying in with popular media themes for the time.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Black Ops (BLOPS) broke the usual ‘world at war’ pattern of the Modern Warfare series and placed you in the shoes of elite special forces soldiers, doing wet work behind enemy lines to keep the fifthly communists at bay.

It is the fist Call of Duty game from Treyarch to not be set during World War 2.

Most of the ‘story’ in BLOPS resolves around ALEX Mason a CIA SAD operative trying to remember what ‘the NUMBERS mean , Viktor Resnov a Russian WW2 soldier that out to avenge the betrayal and death of his men and Jason Hudson a CIA operative trying to figure it all out.

Events unfold between 1945 and 1968 and takes player across the globe such as the Ural Mountains in eastern USSR, Kazakhstan in central USSR, Cuba, Hong Kong, Laos, South Vietnam, and the Arctic circle.

In classic cold war era tradition is eventually revealed that the numbers relate to a SOVIET numbersstation and that a faction in the Soviet Union is preparing to attack the USA with a nerve gas agent after activing sleeper agents.

Also Resnov has been dead for years and he interrupted the Soviet programming of Mason (it is implied that he is part of the Kennedy assassination) and added some ‘code’ to Mason’s program before he died to exact his revenge on the scientists that created the nerve gas agent.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

Black Ops 2 again breaks with Call of Duty tradition, this time by being the fist Treyarch released Call of Duty game that is a direct sequel to the previous game, being the first Call of Duty game with a non linear story with multiple endings that is influenced by player actions and choice and the fist Call of Duty game set in the near future.

BLOPS2 continues the cold war theme from BLOPS, but this time the campaign runs in two distinct eras:

The past: 1986 to 1989 featuring Alex Mason and

Current day: 2025 featuring his son David Mason.

The plot revolves around a social, political and military movement in 2025 that is plotting to pit the USA and CHINA against each other in a new Cold War and the birth of that movement in the late 1980’s.

Players are again treated various exotic locations around the world, including a section set during the South African/Angolan Border war, Soviet invasion Afghanistan and Nicaragua.

BLOPS 2 swaps out the ‘programmable man’ from BLOPS to the ‘Programmable Machine’ and several of the story missions are set around gathering intel and or stopping drone and hacking attacks against US or Chinese targets.

The game also introduced a new element to the single player campaign called: Strike Force.

From the Call of Duty Wiki:

“These missions are sandbox, and play similarly to a Real Time Strategy game. The player can assume the role of a commander, command ground forces, and on top of this, there will be the ability to go back to the traditional first-person and take part in the action themselves”

http://callofduty.wikia.com/wiki/Call_of_Duty:_Black_Ops_II

There are six possible endings depending on various player choices, actions and outcomes during the campaign.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

What we know so far:

The game is a direct follow up on Black OPS2 and is set in 2065, 40 years after the events of Black OPS2.

It has not been revealed what ‘ending’ is used as canon, but that the ‘programmable man from BLOPS 1 and the ‘programmable machine from BLOPS2’ theme now extends to the use of Robots in war (programmable machines) and Super soldiers enhanced with technology (programmable man and machine).

Call of Duty Black OPS3 will release on November 6, 2015

This primate has an unhealthy obsession with all things tech and pc gaming and when not in front of his Battlestation he can be found roaming the Cape wildlands with his motorcycle.
