First things first, I was really disappointed that there was not another Nag Jam this year. It’s a pity because it drove the crowds to the indie stands and gave them an inside view in the game making process that isn’t normally seen or understood. When it came to the actual indie devs there I am sorry to say that for the most part it was fairly lack luster, I know they don’t have a ton of money but black and white plain text poster with a game/studio name on will not attract attention.

Celestial Games

This is the year of Celestial Games being at rAge and it is nice to see the progress made on the game but most of all during a chat with them we found out they are actually dedicated to giving us B.A.D. Their stand at rAge was their setup from last year of a few networked machines allowing con-goers to give the newly textured and reworked Drone system a few rounds.

Amplify Games

When it comes to rogue-likes there are more than a few on the market at the moment and more than a few appeal to a speed running crowd. When I saw Polygod it definitely reminded me of my days playing old quake and doom shooters so when I found out it was a combination of those old shooters and rogue-like aspects from Binding of Issac and Crypt of the Necrodancer. We got to have a chat with them and found out a little more about their greenlit game.

Zero Degree Games(My rAge highlight)

Definitely the most noteworthy of the indie stands, a thrilling adventure game set in our very own South Africa. Puzzles that wrack the brain and a most intriguing story to say the least. It had its launch at rAge and is currently in the process of getting greenlit on steam. They are planning on going the route of GoG and Humble if you prefer those distribution services. Reasonably priced and worth picking up when you have a chance.

Tertiary education games stands

The way we can truly improve the game dev community in South Africa is through education, not only limited to tertiary education but it is a great sight to see 2 prominent universities of S.A promoting their game development and design courses. There are kids/teenagers out there that still don’t understand that it is a viable career and the tracks to follow if they are truly passionate.
