When it comes to extreme sports games, the industry is severely lacking. Not only is it great that Ubisoft is bringing us something new in the long-ignored genre but something new to an industry that is afraid of creative new ideas/concepts. This is a really fun and exciting gaming experience.

Now what sets Steep apart from the crowd is the focus isn’t around one extreme cold sport. Snowboarding, Skiing, Wingsuit jumps and parachuting are all in the repertoire. The game is set in an open world environment, where you get to choose where you start your line and where it ends. Of course, there’s challenges set up to guide a player through the world and to teach how to actually play the game. From spotting new drop points to the trick system, they are all covered by fairly straightforward tutorials. At first, you might find the trick system a little sluggish but after a little free-riding, it becomes almost second nature. An intriguing feature is being able to set up your own challenge lines which get posted online for your friends to try their hand at. By completing open world challenges (longest ride without bailing) to actual medal challenges which range from point challenges to races, you earn experience and money (I guess?) which levels you up to unlock new drop zones as well as the purchasable customizations for your rider.

I’m not going to delve into all the intricacies and features of the game as I only managed a hands on during the beta this last weekend but what I am pleased to report is the beta was stable. Shockingly so. The gameplay was smooth, loading times were quick and the game looked beautiful. Even the multiplayer features seemed to work well, I encountered a few random people online that were boarding down the same lines as me. I have high hopes for this one, a chord that hasn’t been hit successfully since the original SSX series.
